Beat the Summertime Blues: The 10 Biggest Annoyances to Avoid

June 29, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Summer has finally arrived and with it come all of our favorite outdoor activities such as beach trips and late-night barbecues! Unfortunately, along with this come some potential irritations that could dampen the fun – think searing heat pouring from your car dashboard or an uninvited sunburn on first outing – which may damper our fun summer activities! To make sure those summertime blues don’t take over, check out our top ten tips to overcome these common issues!

Hydrate, Hydrate and Hydrate!

Staying hydrated in hot weather is of utmost importance. Be sure to drink enough fluids throughout the day and limit sugary or caffeinated drinks, such as sodas. Water or electrolyte-based sports drinks provide optimal hydration. Don’t forget to carry a bottle with you when out and about – this can help keep you cool during those scorching summer days!

Always Apply Sunscreen

Sun protection should always come first. Before going outside in direct sunlight, be sure to apply and reapply SPF 30+ sunscreen liberally and as needed throughout the day.

Wear Light Colors

Darker hues absorb more heat than lighter ones, leading to discomfort on hot days. Opting for loose-fitting outfits made of breathable materials like cotton or linen and in light or pastel tones for maximum relief is advised for maximum relief from the oppressive heat.

Cover Up at the Beach or Pool

Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from UV rays, and don’t forget your flip-flops! Sand can become unbearably hot during the middle of the day; make sure that protective footwear is always present to help alleviate discomfort.

Keep Your Car From Overheating

Keep your vehicle well-ventilated by opening windows or sunroofs when possible or parking in a shaded spot to help regulate its internal temperature as much as possible while waiting for it to cool after parking in direct sunlight.

Take Cool Showers or Baths

Avoid overheating easily by taking frequent yet brief but cool showers or baths throughout your day, even if just splashing some cold water on yourself and facial features can help bring down temperature and stay comfortable in the heat.

Limit Outdoor Activities During Peak Hours

The peak hours for heat can typically occur between 10 am and 4 pm; try scheduling outdoor activities during early morning or evening hours to reduce exposure. If necessary, take frequent breaks in shady locations during these peak times.

AC or Fan?

If you are fortunate to own an air conditioner at home, use it! Fans are also great but make sure they’re set up so the cool air hits you directly. To keep your energy bill low, try to limit AC and fan use during peak hours. And make sure to get your AC system repairs and maintenance done regularly to make sure it’s running efficiently.

Bug Repellent

To stay bug-free outdoors, utilize insect repellent regularly. Choose one containing DEET or Picaridin as its active ingredient for maximum effectiveness; and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Pollen Prevention

If you suffer from pollen allergies, try keeping your windows closed during peak seasons and installing an air filter with high-efficiency ratings in your home. Also, avoid pollen-filled environments like fields or parks if possible – but if this is impossible, take antihistamines prior to leaving home.

Summer can be an amazing season, but it also comes with its share of inconveniences that can make life challenging. By following the advice in this article, you should have no trouble beating summertime blues and making the most of what this season has to offer!

From taking cool showers or baths to limiting outdoor activities during peak hours and using bug repellent when spending time outdoors, these strategies will help keep you comfortable even on hot days. And if pollen is an issue for you, take some antihistamines before heading out and use a high-efficiency air filter at home. These simple steps should make summer a favorite season of your own!
