How to Give Your Child an Unforgettable Summer Vacation

June 7, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Some of the best memories for a child are during summer vacation. That time when they’re out of school for two or three months. They have so much free time, away from homework, away from school, away from anything boring, and their bedtime is a bit later too! What’s not to love about the summer? But as a parent, chances are, the summer is the only time that you really get to have quality time with your kid, right? But, they deserve an unforgettable summer vacation.

It’s usually the only time when employees can get a vacation, and it’s the best time to really get out there in the great outdoors. So with this extra time and these long summer days, you’re obviously going to want to give your little one a lot of fun, right? Well, here is how you can help give your child the most unforgettable summer vacation ever!

Start By Planning Ahead

If your kid isn’t out of school yet, then this is going to give you a chance to look into options on how you can keep them entertained for the summer. Summer vacation is the perfect time to make special memories together by getting outside, traveling, and enjoying the fresh air.

Create a fun summer routine and mark it on your family calendar. This will help your kids feel excited about what is happening each day and will enhance their vacation experience. Encourage your children to participate in daily chores such as gardening, dusting, or cooking.

This will teach them responsibility and help them stay fit and healthy. Moreover, they will also learn about new things. For example, if your children want to learn guitar or any other musical instrument, you should motivate them and help them to practice.

It will increase their interest in music and improve their language skills too. Now, this doesn’t mean that you should make your kid learn (like school) or make them do chores. But obviously, you can’t have a trip planned out every day. So on the days that you need to work, you should keep them busy with something else.

Get Them Active

With it being summer vacation, one thing that’s going to excite kids is video games like Robolox and Fortnite. They’re going to want to play that with their friends from school, which is entirely understandable. While some video games and screen time are fine, the last thing you want is for this to be the only thing they do.

Too much screen time can have negative effects on their health, including increased risk of obesity and attention problems. Encourage your children to get up and move throughout the day by setting a daily exercise goal. Adding fun activities such as hikes or outdoor scavenger hunts can make it more interesting and help them stick to their goals.

Make it a Family Affair

What’s summer vacation without a real vacation, right? This can be a fun road trip, maybe a resort, or even a cruise!  In the end, it’s really about getting the entire family to spend time together. Plus, this is going to be the best way to get your child to truly have unforgettable memories.

They’re going to look back and remember the fun times with their parents and where they took them too. Speaking of fun family affairs, why not go with something incredibly traditional such as the great outdoors?

Take Them Camping

Whether it’s camping underneath the stars in national parks or going on a long drive with the sun setting on the horizon, overall, it’s memorable for them, but this is also going to be what’s memorable for you too.  But you honestly can’t go wrong with camping! It’s one of the best unforgettable summer vacations!

Camping is a great way to introduce kids to nature. They’ll be captivated by the star-dotted sky, the call of the owl, and the tiny bugs. Make sure you teach kids about outdoor safety and Leave No Trace etiquette before your trip. It’s also a good idea to brush up on first aid skills in case of an emergency.

Depending on your child’s age, you can also try to encourage (supervised) risky play that will teach them adaptability, attention, and managing their fears. Bringing a telescope and meteorology books for kids will also add an educational element to your camping trip.

A campsite near an ocean is always a bonus. Generally speaking, it’s all about getting them out in nature, as this is where some of the best memories are made. However, if you sincerely believe they’ll dislike camping, such as with a tent, you can even do camping with an RV, stay in a log cabin, or even go as far as just getting an Airbnb that’s located comfortably in the woods too.

Consider a Safari

Do you have to go all the way to South Africa to truly experience a safari? Absolutely not! A family safari is an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience that can leave a lasting mark on your children for years to come.

Talk with your kids about the animals you will see and watch wildlife films together to get them excited about their upcoming safari adventure.

They will enjoy the shared thrill of spotting big games in their natural habitat. There are zoos throughout the country that offer that safari-like experience. You get to drive in your own vehicle and get around these animals. It’s significantly more affordable than a traditional African safari, and it’s still going to be just as memorable!

Unforgettable Summer Vacation

Do Something Spontaneous

Honestly, some of the most memorable events are the ones that are just out of nowhere and super spontaneous, such as going out for sundaes, a trip out of the blue, a random trip to an amusement park, bungee jumping, etc.

These are fun, not planned (the way kids like it), and sometimes that lack of structure is the best way to go! So why not try this out? In the end, it’s not always giant acts that make your kid have these special memories, it’s going to be those little ones that they’ll never forget.  Having fun also means having accidental slip and fall cases, especially with kids. Don’t let it stop the fun but always be prepared.
