7 Tips for Choosing the Right Facial Cleanser for Your Skin Type

November 25, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Are you on the hunt for the perfect facial cleanser? Do you want to know what to look for when choosing the right cleanser?

Everyone should cleanse their face twice daily, in the morning and evening, to ensure their skin is happy and healthy. Many people think you can just pick any cleanser off the shelf, and it’ll be good enough for you. This is not the case at all. If you do this, you could be doing more harm than good.

So, this post will give you seven tips for choosing the right facial cleanser for your skin type. Keep reading to learn more!

Know Your Skin Type

The first tip you must follow when choosing the best cleanser for your skin type is understanding your skin type. There are four main skin types: normal, dry, oily, and combination.

Usually, determining your skin type can be pretty simple, and all you need to do is look at your complexion. If your skin looks as though it is free from banishes and generally looks and feels healthy, you likely have normal skin.

Dry and flaky skin tells us that you have dry skin, and shiny skin, which is prone to break out, means you likely have oily skin. Anywhere between dry and oily means, you have combination skin.

Consider Your Skin Care Concerns

When choosing the right facial cleanser for your skin type, the next thing to consider is your skincare concerns. There are hundreds of different facial cleansers to choose from, and many of them target different issues or problems you may have.

Some cleaners are designed for those with acne-prone skin to control your acne, while others can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and some will even help to add moisture to your skin. It is always good to choose a cleanser based on your concerns.

Choose a Gentle Formula

The skin on your face is incredibly sensitive and is something you need to be far more careful with than the skin on your body. When choosing a facial cleanser, you want to consider the formula of the cleanser.

A facial cleanser should be gentle and have a gentle formula so that it doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils or irritate any sensitive skin you might have. Looking for formulas that are sulfate-free and non-comedogenic is a great idea.

Avoid Harsh Scrubs

Many believe that viciously scrubbing their skin will help them eliminate any dirt blocking their paws or any acne on the surface. Although it is commonly believed that harsh scrubs will cleanse your face more effectively, this isn’t the case.

Using harsh scrubs on your sensitive face can do more harm than good, causing irritation and dryness. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, facial cleansers with small exfoliating beads that gently remove the dead skin cells without being too harsh on the skin are a great choice.

Don’t Overdo It

When finding the right facial cleanser, it is very easy to get sucked into the skincare world and overdo it. You don’t need to scrub your face multiple times a day to keep it clean; once or twice a day is plenty.

Over-cleansing can do more harm than good by stripping the skin of its natural oils and causing irritation.

Test It Out First

Before committing to any specific facial cleanser, it is always a good idea to test it on a small area of your face or arm to see how your skin reacts to it.

This is especially important for those prone to sensitive skin and sensitivities to various products. If you notice any adverse side effects, including redness, itching, or even burning, make sure to discontinue use immediately and try something else.

Talk to Your Dermatologist

Last but not least, if you’re still having trouble finding the perfect facial cleanser for your needs, one of the best things you could do to help yourself is to visit a dermatologist. They are professionals in the world of skincare and will be able to help you with ease.
