Ups and Downs When Trying to Conceive: How to Deal with Them

October 28, 2022 by Pam Maynard

When trying to conceive, it is normal to experience a roller coaster of emotions. There are highs and lows, good days and bad days. You may be excited one minute and discouraged the next.

But remember that these emotions are all part of the process—they are perfectly normal and do not mean that you are doing anything wrong.

Every woman’s body is different, and there is no “right” way to feel when you are trying to conceive. Just as each woman’s body is different, so is each woman’s journey to motherhood.

To give you an idea of what you might be feeling, here are some common emotions that women experience when trying to conceive:

What Women Commonly Feel When Trying to Conceive

  • Excitement

At the beginning of your journey to parenthood, you may feel nothing but excitement. This is a time of hope and possibility; it can be thrilling to think about all the amazing things that lie ahead.

  • Anxiety

As you start to read more about getting pregnant and the many things that can go wrong, it’s normal to start feeling a little anxious.

You may worry about your ability to get pregnant or whether you will be able to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. This is perfectly normal, and it’s important to remember that most women who want to get pregnant will eventually succeed.

  • Frustration

As month after month goes by without a positive pregnancy test, it’s common to start feeling frustrated.

You may feel like you’re doing everything right, but it’s just not happening for you. This can be a difficult emotion to deal with, but try to remember that it is not necessarily a reflection on you as a person or on your ability to be a parent.

  • Sadness

When you see others around you getting pregnant and having babies, it’s normal to feel a twinge of sadness. This is especially true if you have been trying for a long time without success.

It’s important to allow yourself to feel this sadness but try not to dwell on it too much. Remember that your time will come and that you will be a great parent when it does.

These are just a few emotions you may experience when trying to conceive. Don’t worry, they’re normal!

The important thing is to find a way to cope with them healthily. Here are some tips:

How to Handle the Ups and Downs While Trying to Get Pregnant

Don’t compare yourself to others.

One of the most important things to remember when trying to conceive is that everyone is different and that there is no “normal.” Some couples can get pregnant very quickly, while others may take longer. It’s important not to compare yourself to others and to focus on your journey.

Be patient.

Trying to conceive can be a long and frustrating process. It’s important to be patient and give your body time to do what it needs to do. You may not get pregnant the first month you start trying or even the second or third. But if you keep at it, eventually, you will succeed.

Talk to someone who understands.

It can be helpful to talk to someone who has been through the same thing as you or knows what you’re going through. Aside from your doctor, you could try talking to a friend or family member who has been through fertility treatment or join a support group for women trying to conceive.

Ups and Downs When Trying to Conceive

Find a healthy outlet for your emotions.

It’s important to find a healthy way to deal with your emotions rather than bottling them up or trying to ignore them. Some people find that exercise helps, while others prefer journaling or creative pursuits. Find what works for you and make a point of doing it regularly.

Educate yourself.

Make sure you know what to expect before and during pregnancy. Do some research on the following:

  • Pregnancy symptoms: What would you feel during the earliest days of pregnancy? Are there any physical changes you should expect?
  • Ovulation bleeding: Is it normal to bleed during ovulation when trying to conceive? What does this mean for your fertility?
  • Implantation bleeding: Is implantation bleeding a sign of early pregnancy? What does it look like, and when should you expect it?
  • Prenatal care: What should you do to have a healthy pregnancy? What are the things to avoid?

Knowing these things will help you be more in tune with your body and better understand the process.

Final Thoughts

It is normal to experience a range of emotions when trying to conceive. These emotions are often caused by the stress of the situation and the lack of control you may feel. The important thing is to find a healthy way to cope with them.

Follow the tips outlined above, and always remember that you’re not alone. There are many people who have been through the same thing and come out on the other side successfully. With time, patience, and a positive attitude, you will be able to achieve your goal of getting pregnant.
