Driving Stresses You Out? Here are 6 Ways to Control it

October 14, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Does getting behind the wheel stress you out? If yes, then you are not alone, as a new study has found that 66% of Americans experience stress and anxiety when driving.

There are a variety of factors that can trigger this stress. For example, you’re running late for an important meeting and get stuck in mile-long traffic.

This could be only one of the reasons that driving frustrates you.

On the road, not only your safety matters but others’ as well. That’s why you must manage your stress to prevent any harmful situation. The key to handling driving stress requires patience and a great deal of concentration.

If you are wondering how to do it, keep reading these six effective ways to make the journey less stressful.

1. Give yourself extra time

Lack of time on the road is one of the reasons for stress. Under stress, you are more likely to speed up and get lost on the road.

As a solution, you should allow extra time on the commute, especially when driving to a new route. Estimate how much time it will take and leave earlier so you don’t have to hurry.

Giving yourself extra time will also benefit you in relieving your stress without any effort. This way, you will be able to drive calmly even if you run into traffic or get any unintended delays for your work.

2. Prepare for the new route

Preparing yourself is always paramount, particularly when driving. When you are prepared for a new route, there will be fewer chances of emerging stress.

You should look at your route and evaluate whether it is safe and convenient for you. Ignore the route if it shows any diversion that might interrupt you and cause you stress.

Also, it would be best if you don’t try to take any alternative shortcuts as, in some cases, it won’t help you achieve a calm state of mind.

3. Keep yourself aware

Another reason why stressful driving situations happen is that other drivers on the road do something unexpected, and you get caught.

If you are not in your mind, you might lose control. Keep your focus on the road to be aware of any upcoming hazards. In this case, you should stay focused and prepare for defensive driving to avoid such troubles.

Keeping your stress level low will allow you to act faster to take control of your vehicle. If you are a calm driver, that doesn’t mean other drivers are as well.

You should be aware of maintaining distance from a recklessly driven vehicle to avoid crashes.

4. Use a fuel/ Gas card

What could be more stressful than forgetting to fill the car’s tank and being out of cash on the journey?

You might use a credit card in this situation, but that’s not the best decision.

To get the maximum of valuable reporting features on your fuel refill and protection, using a trusted company gas card will provide you convenience and an extra layer of protection.

Also, if you are wondering how to save money on fuel, you will be surprised to know the benefits of using a fuel or gas card. You will say goodbye to all the recipients as it will provide you with digital statements of all the purchases.

This way, you can keep tracking your fuel purchases and avoid later stress.

5. Switch off your cell phone

No matter how experienced a driver you are, there is no need to use cell phones while driving. Research has found that half of young people use a mobile phone or fall for other distracting activities.

This causes them to lose control of their vehicle, which ultimately increases anxiety. If you get anxious while driving, avoiding any activity that takes your attention away will be a good idea.

Driving often is another way to become a calm driver. Keep practicing driving regularly, as it will help you to increase your confidence and make you comfortable.

6. Stay hydrated

In any critical situation, people often start to panic and get into severe car accidents. Coping with stress while driving is not as easy as it sounds for most people.

Previous studies have found that dehydration is one of the leading causes that reduce the cognitive ability and increases driving errors. If you are a nervous driver, you need to keep yourself hydrated before you start the engine. It will improve your focus and give you the energy to concentrate on driving properly.

Traveling improves your mental health only if you drive safely. If you feel tired, dizzy, or confused, the first thing to do is pull over and drink some water.  Furthermore, don’t drive when you do not feel you can manage.
