The Surprising Benefits of Training Your Abs

August 12, 2022 by Pam Maynard

If you’re interested in fitness, the likelihood is that you’re hoping to achieve health or aesthetic benefits from your exercise routine – but did you know training your abs comes with a long list of advantages that you may not have known about?

From being able to breathe easily, to improving how you perform in sports, read on to find out more.

How to train your abs

If you’re looking to grow and tone your abs but you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry! Many exercises target specific areas, so you can benefit, including the 30-day ab challenge. You should make sure that you’re working on your abs at least twice a week so as not to neglect them, and so you can see change faster.

Increasing intensity also helps to keep your workouts exciting, so you can avoid becoming bored of sit-ups and crunches. You could try dumbbell crunches, V-sits, or Russian twists to name a few – this way, you can feel motivated by your routine.

Aesthetics

It’s no secret that training your abs can result in a more toned stomach, making aesthetics one of the main reasons why people train their abdominal muscles. Adding the correct type of ab exercises to your routine for a prolonged period means that you’re more likely to create a slimmer and more defined waist.

Taking part in these exercises means you can reduce the circumference around your stomach, which is often an indicator of future health problems so that you can lead a happy and healthy lifestyle. If you’ve already lost weight through cardio and fat burning, training your abs means you can tighten up your stomach and improve visible definition – this is the way that many athletes end up with a 6-pack.

But you don’t need a 6-pack as evidence, other benefits come with training your abs too…

Improves breathing

There are benefits that come along with training your abs that aren’t simply based on aesthetics. Working your abs means that you’ll end up with stronger core muscles, which can benefit your body in many ways, and one of them is that you’ll be able to breathe easier.

Tightening and strengthening your core with ab exercises means your body will be aligned, with your organs and diaphragm sitting in the proper position, meaning you can breathe more deeply and easily.

Improves posture

Good posture is essential when it comes to our health and focusing on strengthening our abs during training means we can improve the way our body feels day-to-day. If you have bad posture, you may find that your back aches – this is due to the compression that bad posture places on your spine and pelvis.

Correcting this through ab exercises means that you can strengthen your lower back and maintain a good, straight posture whilst standing or sitting, and you will be sure to feel the difference.

The Surprising Benefits of Training Your Abs

Improves overall performance

Having strong core and ab muscles means that you’re much more likely to perform well in sports. You should make sure that both your upper and lower abs are engaged at the same time – you can do this with various breathing exercises, weightlifting, training in cardio and yoga.

Strengthening the muscles in the core will give you more power which means you’re more likely to be successful in sports that include a lot of running and jumping, as well as general situations in which you need to move quickly and precisely. So, if you’re looking to improve performance in one of your favorite sports, start with the abs – they can make all the difference.
