How to Look After Your Engagement Ring

July 1, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Once your lover pops the question, thorough engagement ring maintenance should be a major priority. You’ve been waiting for the right engagement ring for months, if not years.

Now that it shall be a constant presence on your hand, you would like to keep it shining for years to come. In this article, we’ll share with you some tips for caring for your engagement ring.

  1. Purchase insurance

Insurance is required to protect your capital investments in case something is destroyed, stolen, or lost. As the value of precious metals and diamonds rises, it is also critical to get your jewelry evaluated every five years.

For instance, If you lost a 3-carat emerald cut diamond ring valued 10 years ago, the insurance value would be substantially less than the real replacement cost now.

  1. Avoid touching the center stone

Other precious stones and diamonds are magnets for body oil, dirt, and dust.  When putting on or taking off your ring, grip the band from either side of the stone rather than the stone itself. When your stone appears foggy or murky, something is most likely caught beneath it.

How to Choose an Engagement Ring: A Comprehensive Guide for Women

  1. Clean your ring regularly

The buildup of oil, dust, or dirt can impede the light interrelations in the stone, thus having a brilliantly cut diamond yet unclean is pointless. Whenever you don’t clean it, you are not doing the stone justice, since it isn’t living up to its full potential.

Cleaning your ring isn’t difficult; simply use a cleaning jewelry kit or place your ring in a cup of warm water and add a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent or soap. Allow it to sit for just a few minutes (or overnight), then clean the basket and stone gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush, then rinse, and pat dry using a lint-free cloth or use a hairdryer.

Clean it once at least every several weeks, and most importantly, ensure you fully cover the drain.

  1. Have your ring checked professionally twice a year

Normal wear and use might cause your prongs to bend or loosen. Make sure the prongs are properly securing your diamond to avoid any stones unintentionally slipping out. Pretty much every single jeweler will perform this free of charge, even if you did not purchase your ring from them.

How to Look After Your Engagement Ring

  1. Store your engagement ring safely

Whenever you don’t wear your engagement or wedding ring every day or chose to leave it at home while you go on a vacation, ensure you get a secure place for it. Use a jewelry box with fabric-lined within it, as well as separators to keep your ring from rubbing against other pieces of jewelry. For further security, store the jewelry box in a fireproof safe or a lockbox.

  1. Protect your ring from chemicals

When doing dishes, cleaning the bathroom, or performing other jobs that need harsh abrasive or chemical solutions, it’s a good idea to remove your ring. These can degrade and impair the polish of metal settings.

  1. Don’t remove your ring in public

Hand washing is required in public restrooms but resist the urge to take off your engagement ring when you’re doing it. The potential of leaving your ring mostly on the sink ledge or, worse, dropping it down the sink is too great a risk.

Endnote

For the majority of women who aren’t used to wearing fine jewelry on a regular basis, wearing an expensive diamond for the very first time is equivalent to babysitting a newborn. From time to time you may stare down at your gleaming new addition and wonder about engagement ring care: Should I spend the night in it? Should I remove it before showering? Can it truly be cleaned with dish soap?

Diamond rings are obviously quite pricey. If you have one, it’s in your best interest to keep it looking new and shining.
