How to Pack Your First Diaper Bag

May 29, 2022 by Pam Maynard

What should I carry in my diaper bag? As a new parent, you’ll quickly learn that the answer to this question will vary depending on your specific needs, the age of your child, and the situation you find yourself in. With that said, there are some things that you should make sure to include in your diaper bag at all times, as they cover the basics no matter what situation you find yourself in.

The things you need the most are at the top

Diapers, wipes, and food. Depending on where you are going, you’ll want to pack some type of covering for baby’s car seat. Baby will also need a change of clothes and a breathable baby blanket in case he has an accident.

If you plan on breastfeeding or pumping while you’re out, make sure you bring your pump and pump parts, bottles, and bags so that baby doesn’t get hungry between feedings.

You might also want to include a small picture book or toy just in case your little one gets fussy while trying to keep him occupied on your trip. Everything else can be thrown into smaller plastic bags that fit underneath your main bag.

Keep it organized in compartments

When you are out with your little one, your diaper bag will be overflowing with stuff. Because of that, it’s important that you can easily find what you need and that everything is organized so you don’t lose something.

Try using different sized zipper bags and different compartments in your diaper bag to organize baby’s changing supplies, snacks, toys, and other things you may need. It will make finding what you need much easier when something spills or someone needs a diaper change.

When in doubt, pack extra!

If you’re still not sure what to pack, you might be bringing too much. You’ll have a better chance of forgetting something than going overboard. It’s a good idea to bring a few extra changes of newborn baby onesies, burp cloths, diapers, and pacifiers along with you.

You may find it easier as well if you put together a changing station in your hotel room using an ottoman or folding table and place everything close by in an easy-to-carry bag that keeps things separate (e.g., your baby’s change of clothes and outfit on one side, diapers in another compartment, baby wipes and lotion in another).

These are just some great tips for what to pack when traveling with baby – try them out next time you’re heading out!

Don’t forget entertainment items

Although you may be a pro at keeping a baby entertained in your home, things are a little different when you’re out and about. In addition to a swaddle or two and some burp cloths, bring along items that can entertain your little one away from home so she isn’t whining for something else every time you turn around.

It doesn’t take much for most babies—an interesting textured toy is all it takes sometimes! Make sure these entertaining items are easily accessible; otherwise, they won’t do any good. For example, don’t stash an entertaining toy in your diaper bag’s bottomless pit of an interior pocket. A boring toy might not make it out of there!

Extra clothing options are key

Pack a few options that allow you to change your baby on the go. It’s always nice to have something other than a onesie or tee for baby, especially if you’re going out for dinner or staying out late. Extra outfits are also useful if your child spills food all over her outfit and you have no backup option. Bring along one of their favorite blankets or toys as well, just in case they need a little comfort during travel time.

If you’re just starting out as a new mom, you may be trying to find your way through some unfamiliar territory. If that sounds like you, don’t worry—you can always ask for help from those around you.

In fact, it’s best if you do! But don’t forget that at some point, when things have calmed down a bit and your baby is older and no longer needs all of that stuff crammed into her diaper bag during every outing, these little tips will come in handy—and be worth remembering.
