One of the most important aspects to your children’s health is their hearing health, and yet this is something that is normally so easy to overlook. In fact, a lot of parents really don’t always manage to give this the credit it is due.
The result of doing that, however, is that your children might have trouble hearing later in life, which can in turn lead to all sorts of issues around self-esteem and confidence, general health and wellbeing, and even predicted lifespan.
So let’s take a look at some ideas for how to help take care of your kids’ hearing health.
Teach Them About Noise
One of the most valuable things you can do here is simply to teach them about noise, and in particular how noise can damage their hearing if they are not careful. It can be incredible how much noise can actually affect a child’s hearing, so it’s something that you are going to want to think about.
Just educating them on this is often going to be enough to ensure that they are aware of the problem, and that they will therefore avoid listening to things too loudly.
Part of this might be that you want to inform them about the potential dangers of using earbuds and headphones. These can exacerbate and cause hearing loss if you are not careful, so again just make sure that they are aware of the issues that can arise here.
Gently Clean Their Ears
You actually have to be really careful with cleaning your ears. The main thing to bear in mind here is that ears are already self-cleaning machines. You don’t actually need to clean them at all.
The only time you might need to do so is if there is excess wax that doesn’t seem to be falling away naturally as it should. In this case, you can simply wipe around the outside of the ear gently.
But the important thing to remember here is never to stick anything inside your children’s ears. You could easily harm them and cause damage, which might in turn lead to hearing loss and other problems. It is much better to avoid putting anything in them at all, and to take the gentle approach.
Ask How Their Hearing Is
It’s a simple thing, but just asking your children how their hearing is and whether it is getting worse or not can be helpful. They might well be experiencing some degree of hearing loss, but didn’t know how to talk about it for instance, so it’s good to ask.
You can also look out for signs that their hearing might be worsening, such as them asking you to repeat yourself a lot of the time, or needing to have the TV up louder than usual. Keep on top of these signs and you will be able to protect their hearing health a lot more effectively.
