How to Prepare Your Child For Their First Car

March 24, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Once you’ve weighed up the pros and cons of getting a car for your teenager after they have passed their test, it’s time to think about how you will prepare them for driving and taking care of it. A car will give them the independence they crave (and need) at this age. It helps them become self-sufficient, but there are also some issues you need to consider.

You want to make sure your child is safe when they are on the road, and they must prove they can be trusted, so here is a guide for preparing your child for their first car.

Show Them Responsible Driving

Responsible driving is vital no matter how old you are, but novice drivers may not grasp the essentials of safe driving when owning their first car.

Although they have passed their test, you can still take some time to accompany them in the car for everyday tasks, like going shopping or even driving on the highway to improve their confidence. Take this opportunity to highlight things they can do to improve and remind them to avoid reckless driving.

It’s tempting for first-time drivers to show off to friends, but this will not make them a good driver, and it could put them and others at risk.

Remind Them About Costs

Owning a car is much more than simply having a way to get to school or work without relying on you or even public transport. There are additional costs involved that they may not have considered, so you should remind them about these expenses.

Such expenses can include paying for gas and their insurance, which is likely to be higher than they expect as they are not yet a proven driver. Besides this annual maintenance or repairs can also raise the cost of owning a car, so make sure they know how to budget properly.

Teach Them How to Look After It

Teaching your child basic car maintenance will make it easier for them to overcome common problems they may encounter with their car. If the vehicle is an older model, the chances of breakdowns increase, but knowing how to change a tire or replace brake pads can reduce the costs and teach them essential life skills.

It’s also worth encouraging them to keep it clean, as this will reduce the risk of accidents and distractions, and it also makes the car a pleasant place to be.

Tell Them What to Do In An Emergency

Hopefully, your child will never be involved in an accident, but even minor fender benders could cause problems. Highlight what they should do if they collide with another vehicle so they do not panic and drive away without exchanging insurance information.

You can also give them contact information for personal injury attorneys who can help make a claim if the accident was not their fault. This can put them at ease and prevent the incident from affecting their premiums.

Summing Up

Your child’s first car is a significant milestone in their life. It can prepare them for growing up and ensures they remain safe and confident on the road. By taking the time to prepare them for their first car, you can let them take the wheel and prove that you can trust them.
