These Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies are a soft, chewy, homemade version of red velvet Oreos. They have a delicious hint of cocoa, vibrant red color, and tangy cream cheese frosting. Plus – you get 2 cookies in one. These are perfect for Valentine’s Day, Christmas or anytime you are needing a Red Velvet dessert and cream cheese frosting.

Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies Ingredients:

Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies

  • Flour 1 ⅔ cup
  • Cocoa powder 1 ½ tbsp
  • Corn starch 2 tsp
  • Baking soda ¾ tsp
  • Salt ¼ tsp
  • Butter ½ cup
  • Sugar 2/3 cup
  • 1 large egg
  • Vanilla extract 1 tsp
  • Vinegar 1 tsp
  • Red food liquid dye 2 tsp

Cream cheese frosting Ingredients:

Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies

  • Butter ¼ cup
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Cream cheese 3 ounces
  • Powdered sugar 1 cup
  • Salt ¼ tsp

Red Velvet Sandwich Cookie Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Add the dry ingredients: flour, starch, salt, soda and cocoa, and mix in a bowl.

Add softened butter and sugar in another bowl and mix.

Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies

Add vinegar, vanilla extract, egg and red dye to the butter and sugar mixture and mix thoroughly.

Mix the dry ingredients slowly into the wet mixture.  

Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies

Form the dough into balls (use a cookie scoop so your fingers aren’t red for days) and place 2 inches apart onto a cookie sheet.

Bake the cookies for about 8 minutes. 

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool.

Frosting Directions:

In a large bowl beat together the butter, shortening and cream cheese. 
 
Slowly beat in the salt and powdered sugar until the desired sweetness is reached. 
 
(If frosting seems too thick, beat in 1 tablespoon of heavy cream.)

To make the assembly easier, refrigerate the frosting for about an hour.

Sandwich Directions:

Now the best part, frost the bottom of one cookie and sandwich the second cookie on top.

Repeat until you have all of the sandwiches completed.

**Frosted cookies can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
