How to Choose a Hat Style Based on Face Shape

October 27, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Hat style and face shape – decoding the link between the two is essential for choosing the suitable hats!

The wide range of hat styles can make choosing hats quite overwhelming, as many would believe, but the real reason is the lack of knowledge about selecting the right hat. Usually, the focus is on what types of hats are available in the market, and we follow trends. While there is nothing wrong with this approach, most people often miss another important aspect that impacts the looks when wearing the chosen hat.

For example, you might have a fascination for womens straw cowboy hats because the Wild West style is an irresistible attraction to create fashion by blending the vintage style with modern outfits. But sadly, the cowboy hat might not suit you because it does not go well with your face shape. Yes, the face shape should drive hat selection.

So, it becomes clear that you must strike a balance between the hat style and your face shape, or you could make heads turn around for all the wrong reasons.  Never should you look out of sorts by wearing a hat, and the only way to ensure that you have the right hat that complements your face shape is to be conscious about both when choosing hats.

Although there is a hat for every kind of face, you will rarely find hats that are universally appealing on all face shapes. Indeed, some face shapes are more accommodating and versatile when it comes to matching hat styles, but still, you need to be sure that the hat complements your face shape.

This article should help you choose hats with confidence, provided you know the shape of your face, which most of us are aware of.

Hats for long faces

Those with a long face would try to avoid hat styles that make a face look longer. Instead, they should try out some hat styles that can make a face appear shorter. Ideally, the hats that would suit most are the ones that have brims that cut across the forehead, but the brim width should be appropriate.

Wide brim hats that include all kinds of sun hats are suitable for long faces, and cowboy hats too seem to be most befitting on long faces. Placing the hat across the forehead provides the right look by complementing the facial features.  Those with an elongated face can try out trapper hats with flaps on the sides of the head that balance the longitudinal features.

Hats for square faces

The sharp angular features of the square face need some easement to acquire a bit of roundness that only floppy hats and sun hats can provide due to their soft and flexible construction. Other wide brim hats with rounded brims are suitable for square faces as it helps to minimize the sharpness of the face by drawing more attention to the hat rather than the face.

Another option is cloche, the hat that has overall roundness from the brim to the crown. The vintage looks of a cloche add a fun accent that lends some soft touches to the sharp features of square faces.

Hats for round faces

It means that these features have the exact dimensions. Since round faces have in-built symmetry and are shorter in length, the proportion between the length of the face and the widest part is relatively even. A shallow crown and the angular details of fedoras and the narrow brim help to downplay the smoothness and roundness of the face.

In addition, angled caps can help to create unique styles, and any other hat style with angled elements like the Panama hat goes well with round faces. Beanies seem to be most suitable for round faces, and as it exposes almost the entire face as compared to hats, it gives more options of balancing the rounded features of the face.

How to Choose a Hat Style Based on Face Shape

Hats for diamond-shaped faces

Wearing hats slightly back of the head suits those with diamond-shaped faces as it helps to maintain the proportion between the jawline and the forehead. Since the hat will sit slightly back on the head, you must carefully select hats that can provide the best fit in that position.

Try out wide-brimmed fedoras that match the wearing style as the top of the head will look wider due to the width of the brim that perfectly contrasts the narrow jawline. To draw the attention away from the narrow forehead, you can wear a pork pie hat or flat cap that adds width to the configuration.

Hats for heart-shaped faces

If you have a heart shaped face with prominent cheekbones, you should keep away from hats with a narrow crown. All types of caps like baseball, newsboy, fedoras and thin-knit beanies are suitable for you. But fedoras should have narrow brims with a slimmer profile that balances the chin and forehead.

The best is baseball caps that seem exclusively made for those with heart shaped faces.
