Your living room has one main purpose – to serve as the social hub of your household and host any visitors you may have. And this is only possible when you have the right type of seating in your living room. Here is how to choose the right living room set collection for your home.
Take Measurements
Take measurements of the room itself. Where are the doors located? Where the windows located? You can’t have the couch block your only entrance and exit, and you may not want to block a picture window.
How large are the doors? You don’t want to buy a couch or chair that can’t be brought into the living room without damaging it. How large is the living room itself? At a minimum, you can’t have a couch that’s longer than the living room. However, most of us want space on either side of the couch. You’ll need to consider how much space you need to open doors or access living room windows, too, into account.
We’d recommend using this information to create a floorplan, though the final plan will depend on the pieces of furniture you choose.
Take a Head Count
How many people live in your house? This isn’t a trick question. That determines the minimum number of seats you need in both your living room and dining room. How many people do you often have over? If you have a family of four but often have grandparents dining with you, you might opt for a dining room table with six seats.
And if you have a family of four and often have four friends over, you’ll want at least eight seats in the living room. Note that this could be provided by a mix of sofas, love seats and chairs. If you have a large family, then you’ll want more couches and chairs than if there are just two of you.
Consider How You Use the Space
Do you tend to gather together in a circle to talk? Or do you gather around a central focal point like the television? This will determine the ideal layout of the living room furniture. You might want to create a separate corner for someone who wants to read quietly or two people who want to play games, if these things often happen in the living room. What can you do if you use the living room for all sorts of things?
Instead of having multiple sets of furniture (which you may not have the budget or space for), consider getting modular sofas. These can be put together to create a single large couch or broken up to provide single seats. And they’re far more comfortable than folding chairs. You could create a de facto love seat in the corner or have separate seats for three strangers.
Think about the Abuse the Furniture Will Endure
Do you have pets that like to sit on furniture? Then you may want additional seating so they can sit next to you, or you’ll at least need upholstery that won’t act like Velcro and attract pet hair. Do you like to eat while sitting on the couch? You might want to choose a couch with stain-resistant upholstery. If the room is rarely used, then you can consider luxurious fabrics.
