5 Ways to Prepare for Buying Term Life Insurance

June 8, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Make sure you have everything you need when you are buying term life insurance

If you are starting your search to buy term life insurance, it can quickly become overwhelming. There are many different requirements, various steps, and an endless amount of options. We have compiled the information to make sure you understand how to find the right term insurance policy, the steps to the application process, and how to ensure you are receiving the lowest rate.

5 Ways to Prepare for Buying Term Life Insurance

These five ways to prepare yourself for buying term life insurance will make your stress levels low and ensure you can take care of your family in case of a tragedy.

5 Tips to Make Buying Term Life Insurance Easier

1. Find Out if You Need Life Insurance

Most people do need life insurance, and it’s best to buy term life insurance as young as possible. There are a few factors to consider when deciding if you need life insurance, such as your financial situation. If you are financially independent and don’t worry about the costs of your death, you might not need the life insurance policy.

You may be able to afford to take care of your loved ones with your own money instead of relying on an insurance policy. Or, perhaps you are retired, and you do not have an income that a dependent is counting on. If you are relating to either of these situations, you probably don’t need it. On the other hand, if anyone relies on you financially, you need life insurance to take care of them.

2. Decide How Much of a Policy You Need

How much should you be spending on your policy? It varies between each person and situation, but it can be highly cost-effective — especially if you buy the policy at a young age. Trying to make up a number can be confusing, and there aren’t any re-dos when it comes to taking out a policy.

There are periodic policy check-ups where you can lower your premium, but it’s best to take out the right amount the first time around. There are numerous factors to consider when deciding how large of a policy to take out, so it’s essential to research or reach out to an insurance agent. There are also online calculators to assist you in estimating the amount you should take out.

3. Know What Will Be on the Application

Ask your insurance agent or research the type of questions asked on the application to ensure that you have the correct information. The application process can be long and include a medical exam, detailed questions, and more. Below are the basic steps of the application process:

  • Receive a quote online or over the phone
  • Speak with an agent about the factors that will affect your premium (medical history, family history, lifestyle habits, etc.)
  • Complete the written application
  • Conduct a medical exam
  • The company reviews the application and determines your premium price through the underwriting process

4. Prepare for the Medical Exam

Not every company or plan requires a medical exam, but most of them do. The exam is required to show the company how much of a risk you are and determine your policy’s price. Try to schedule your exam in the morning because eating any minor thing could affect your blood pressure levels, so you should fast 6-8 hours before the exam.

Skip the morning coffee or cigarette to make sure your blood pressure levels are low as well. Staying hydrated will make it easier for you to give a blood or urine sample and have a list of your prescriptions for the medical examiner prepared.

5. Speak to an Agent to Receive the Most Suitable Rates

You aren’t a professional in the life insurance industry, so it’s essential to consult with someone who does this for a living. An insurance agent will guide you through the process and work with you to receive the plan with the most practical benefits for the lowest possible price. In addition, they will take the stress out of your hands and provide you with the peace of mind that you are protecting your family, which is the most critical part.

Buying term life insurance can sound scary and can be something young adults easily push-off, which should not be the case. Applying as young as possible is one of the best ways to receive the lowest rates.

Fabric allows young adults to apply for life insurance, create wills, and organize their family’s crucial legal information all in one place. Apply for life insurance in as little as 10 minutes online or on their app. Then you can quickly get back to what matters most — your family.
