Taboo Topics 101: The Complete Guide to Teaching Your Children About Guns

February 5, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Whether you’re a gun enthusiast with a notable collection or a handgun owner looking to protect your family, ownership requires specific safety protocols. If you’re one of many gun owners living with children, you’ll need to implement thorough precautions to fend off curious, nosy children.

As a parent and a gun owner, firearm safety is a crucial conversation to have with your little ones to keep them safe and prevent accidental discharges.

Keep Your Kids Safe Top Tips for First Time Gun-Owning Parents

When discussing firearm safety with kids, many parents are unaware of how and when to start.  Most gun experts and firearm instructors agree there is no “correct” age for teaching your children about firearms.

Instead, they recommend teaching children about guns and how to handle them from the get-go to avoid devastating accidents. By speaking with your children about firearms from a young age, you’re positively training them to be comfortable around guns, handle them safely, and know what to do when they see one lying around.

How a firearm can protect your little ones from danger

While there are various valid reasons to own a handgun, one typical explanation is family protection. Many parental figures have access to a loaded-and-ready gun to protect loved ones from unexpected threats and intruders. However, a loaded firearm poses incredible threats to inquisitive children who can easily stumble upon weapons.

While it may be too soon to instruct your child on holding and firing a gun, you should take time to teach them about the essential uses guns have and why you have them in your home. Teaching your children about the benefits of firearms like these helps to demystify them.

Thoroughly explain why you keep guns in your home, go over typical usage, and eliminate fear surrounding firearms while establishing strict protection rules. In doing so, you help little ones become acquainted with guns without allowing them access, keeping them safe and informed.

For your children’s safety, store your firearms in a safe place that is either locked or has a trigger lock.

Finger off the trigger

The first two critical firearm safety rules are treating every gun as if it were loaded and keeping your finger off the trigger until it is safe to shoot. These regulations are simple and ideal for children learning about guns for the first time. As your children grow and become increasingly curious, set up strict guidelines and continue to educate them to ensure their safety and thorough understanding.

Make sure your child is comfortable around your guns

One of the first steps in teaching your children about gun safety is assuring them firearms are not something to fear. Because of the heavy stigma surrounding gun ownership, their intimidating physical appearance, and the loud noise they emit when fired, it’s natural for your child to be scared or shy away from guns.

To ensure that your child is comfortable, avoid handing them a gun and instead start small by educating your little one long before you allow them to hold or feel the firearm. If possible, start with a lighter, smaller caliber gun, allowing them to briefly tough or investigate the locked and unloaded firearm with close supervision.

Teaching Your Children About Guns

Teach Them The Uses of Guns

Whether it’s for hunting, plinking, or self-defense, each gun you own serves a purpose. Spend time teaching your children about the various uses for each firearm you own, allowing them to grow accustomed to them.

For instance, if you own a hunting rifle, explain how you use this rifle to feed your family. By teaching them about different guns and ownership purposes, you’ll instill a safe, comfortable mindset surrounding firearms and set them up for future successful gun usage.

Wrap up

If you are one of the many gun enthusiasts concerned for your child’s safety, follow the correct protocol and gradually teach your little one about firearms and their intended use. Knowledge is power, and with proper training and understanding, your child can ready themselves for the day they shoot their first rifle.
