The Hues of the Summer: 8 Paints and Design Tips to Make Your Home a Summer Oasis

July 8, 2020 by Pam Maynard

Summer calls for some changes in your home decor especially since the temperature can get really hot and sometimes uncomfortable during this time. If you don’t know where to start, here are some paint and design tips to help ready your home for this season.

The Hues of the Summer: 8 Paints and Design Tips to Make Your Home a Summer Oasis

Pick your palettes wisely

There are specific colors that work best during the summer. Light and bright hues are some good choices since they evoke a sense of airiness that help make a room feel lighter. Some great colors to try are:

  • Green and white
  • True blue and teal
  • Coral
  • Light lilacs and blues
  • Tangerine
  • Buttercream yellow
  • Sage green
  • Bright white

Before committing to a color scheme, buy the colors in small paint cans and try it on a patch of wall first. If it looks good, you can proceed with repainting the whole wall.

Paint at the right times

Repainting during summer can be a bit of a challenge since you are working under heat. To help maintain the quality of your paint, make sure to store paint cans in a cool dry place. And if you can, schedule your paint times around the early morning or evening when it’s cool as this allows the paint to turn out much better.

Get fresh with light fabrics

Update your current upholstery and drapery with light ones. This allows the room to stay fresh and cool even during the hot summer. Aside from being light, the material should also be breathable so it doesn’t accumulate sweat. Like your paint colors, you also want to opt for light, bright colors.

Add outdoor lights

Summer calls for more time spent outdoors. To really maximize this, you’ll want to install outdoor lights to be used in the evenings. This is perfect since you get to spend more time outside without suffering from the sweltering heat during the day.

Update your living room furniture

Speaking of day time, the living room will probably be the one place you hang out the most when trying to avoid the hot sun outside. You’ll want to update your living room furniture so it fits with the weather. A sectional couch could be a great addition, but if you’re not able to make a big purchase such as this, you can opt for small items like a wooden rattan basket for hiding clutter or an indoor plant for improving the indoor air quality.

Have a napping nook

The sofa in your living room can serve as the perfect napping area during afternoons. But you can amp up the relaxation vibe in this area further by adding a few items such as your favorite summer reads, a wooden coaster for your iced tea, a small fan, and lots of pillows. Your living room will quickly become your favorite spot in the house when you have these things within easy reach.

Furnish with florals

Nothing says summer better than a vase full of fresh flowers. They’re very easy to maintain and can instantly spruce up a space. On your next trip to the flower shop, pick up a bouquet that’s in season and place them in separate vases throughout the house. It’ll make walking around your home more enjoyable every time you see these fresh blooms.

Add a bar cart

Having a bar cart by your living room or kitchen makes it easy to whip up your favorite cooling cocktails. Find an old table you don’t use anymore and repurpose it into a bar cart. Repaint it in a color like gold or blue and finish off with some stylish glasses and your favorite spirits.
