Which Car is Best to Buy for a Family?

May 29, 2020 by Pam Maynard

When it comes to buying a car, there are different factors to consider if you are getting that car for your family. Someone who is just shopping for themselves will obviously have different priorities and concerns versus someone who needs to drive around their children. And since buying a car is such a major decision, you don’t want to rush through the process. So, with that in mind, here are some things to help you figure out which car is best to buy for a family.

Which Car is Best to Buy for a Family?

Safety Features

Perhaps the most important thing to consider is the safety features. Safety is a top priority for most buyers, but this is even more true when shopping for a family car. You don’t want to drive around your young children in something that isn’t safe.

These days, new cars come with all sorts of safety features. Some things that you can look for include:

  • Automatic reverse emergency braking
  • Lane departure warnings
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blindspot detection
  • Rear-view camera
  • At least 6 airbags within the car

The more advanced features the car has, the better. Spend some time researching safety ratings for each car you’re considering, then look to see what advanced features are included as well.

Entertainment Options

If you have young children, you may want some entertainment options within the car. For starters, you’ll want a car that gives you plenty of options when it comes to playing music. If you can easily connect your smartphone and play your child’s favorite playlist, this is a plus.

Another great feature is a built-in television screen. You’ll keep your kids happy on those long drives if they can watch their favorite Disney movies from the backseat. Finally, some modern cars come with their own Wi-Fi capabilities. With these, you can stream your child’s favorite shows, movies, and music, so that you don’t have to download everything before you go.

Number of Seats

Of course, before you buy any car, you’ll want to consider the number of seats within it. You’ll want enough seats for everyone in your family and enough space for them to sit comfortably. It’s also a good idea to think about the other people you may have in your car at some point. For instance, you may end up driving around your child plus a few of their friends. So even if it’s just you, your spouse, and one child, it may make sense to get a minivan with more seating.

Storage Space

Along these same lines, you should also think about the amount of storage space you’ll need. Will you be hauling around large hockey bags in the trunk? Is this the car you’ll be using for long trips in the Summer? As a parent you can never have enough trunk space, so get a good feel for the size before you decide on a car. While storage space may not be your ultimate deciding factor, it’s still a good idea to give it some thought.

3 Family Cars to Consider

While there are a lot of cars on the market designed for families, some are better than others. Here are 3 great options you can explore when starting your search:

  • The Honda CRV – Each year, Honda puts out a new model of its CRV. The CRV is a compact SUV with 5 seats. It comes with plenty of storage space, and the newer models have some great entertainment options. If you decide to go with a used Honda, you should definitely look into Honda extended warranty options.
  • Toyota Highlander – The Toyota Highlander is slightly larger, holding up to 8 people. Some of the best features of this SUV include its great gas mileage, its handling, and its safety features.
  • Ford Expedition – Another SUV, the Ford Expedition has 3 rows of seating and provides great gas mileage. This is a great option to consider if you want a little more horsepower in your SUV or need it for things like towing.

Choose the Car That’s Right for Your Family

There is no single car that’s best for every family. The key to finding the right car for your family is figuring out what your specific needs are, then researching all the options available. As long as you keep the important factors in mind, such as safety features, entertainment, and size, you should have no trouble finding a great car that the whole family will enjoy.
