My kids love doing arts and crafts. They absolutely love it. Unfortunately, I am terrible at them, and usually get frustrated trying to help them set up. I also get annoyed by the mess that inevitably follows. Thankfully there is a solution out there for parents like me. The smART Sketcher Projector is a tech toy that allows kids to get offline and start creating. They can draw, sketch, and write independently with the help of the app and projector.
With all the time our family has been spending at home lately (and much more to come throughout the summer months), I was looking for kid-friendly activities that didn’t involve more screen time.
The smART Sketcher Projector by Flycatcher was the solution for us. The kids have been begging to use it every day. All I have to do is set it up for them, then I can be hands-off and admire their work from afar.
About smART Sketcher Projector by Flycatcher
, Shay Chen, says, “Our goal is to use emerging technologies to embrace STEAM learning while nurturing creativity, fine motor skills, and basic story-telling.”
Chen acknowledges that kids are drawn to technology, but wanted to find a way to incorporate technology into their everyday play without using more screens.
The smART Sketcher Projector “puts the fun of sketching, drawing, and writing into the hands of kids using photos from any mobile device, step-by-step drawing packs, and curriculum-based writing and spelling activities that bridge the gap between schoolwork, homework, and play.”
Kids can choose from different packs and creativity sets to make stickers, greeting cards, picture frames, letters of the alphabet, animal drawings, museum art, historic architecture, and even turn photos from your phone into sketches.
My Thoughts on the smART Sketcher Projector
As I mentioned, I’m not the type of mom to do lots of arts and crafts with my kids. I encourage them to be as artistic as they want to be, but I’m not very talented in that department. For that reason, I choose art and craft kits very carefully.
Setting Up the smART Sketcher Projector
The smART Sketcher Projector is one of the very best creative toys I have ever used with my kids. The set-up process was incredibly easy. All you have to do is attach the blue projector top that you can store neatly in the bottom of the base when it’s not in use. Then plug it in, turn it on, connect it to the smartphone app, and get sketching!
I have a 6-year-old, a 4-year-old, and a 2-year-old. I thought maybe the oldest would be the only one who would enjoy this toy, but the 4-year-old caught on very quickly, too!
Using the smART Sketcher Projector
They each enjoy drawing different things. We received a few different packs, and each comes with a micro SD card that you insert into the chip reader on top of the projector. The smART Sketcher comes with a neat little carrying case for the SD cards, so it’s easy for the kids to keep them organized in one place.
My daughter loved tracing the unicorn, while my son enjoyed drawing literally any animal (and there were a ton to choose from)!
Even the 2-year-old had fun tracing letters on the dry-erase board. This is one of my favorite sets because it prevents us from wasting paper, and lets the kids start over as often as they need to. Not to mention the kids are learning about letters and sight words without even realizing it!
Another cool feature is that you can turn photos from your phone into sketches using the free app. We tried a picture we took at Disney World last year. The sketch was so clear and easy to copy!
Kids can easily use the smART Sketcher independently by choosing an SD card and using the arrows on the projector to pick a picture. I can also help them out by using the app to pick a drawing. It’s easier to do on the app because you can see all of the options at once. Still, I like that the kids can use the projector without my help since we have a newborn who requires a lot of attention these days!
Final Thoughts.
Overall, the smART Sketcher Projector is a great addition to the arts and crafts area of our house. It’s easy to use, it holds the kids’ attention for long periods of time, and it gets them off of screens! They’re learning and developing their skills. I love that I get to watch them grow as artists without being too hands-on.
This toy is perfect for families that need more at-home activities for their kids that are educational and fun. You can find it at Target and on Amazon for easy delivery or pick-up.
