7 Reasons Why You Should Send Your Kids to a Military Academy

December 26, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Planning your child’s education takes work. It’s not enough to simply put them into the state’s hands and let them drift through public school. A respected military school might be a better choice.

Most American families never think about military academies, unless they come from a military family. After all, less than one percent of the country’s population serves in the armed forces. Yet, a military school can give your kids an unparalleled education as well as set them up with valuable connections for the future.

7 Reasons Why You Should Send Your Kids to a Military Academy

Every college-bound student can benefit from a military school education, whether they’re interested in joining the armed services or not.

Here are a few reasons why.

  1. Success

There’s a common misconception in society that all military schools are for troubled students. There are schools that focus on rehabilitating students but they differ from military academies, which provide opportunities to college-bound students.

Doing well at a military academy can set your child up for success for their whole lives. To succeed, they need to be bright, motivated, and flexible. A child that’s grown up in a military environment has a slight advantage. When military kids navigate a new school, they typically learn how to fit in quickly.

  1. College Prep

The best military academies have a 100 percent college acceptance rate. The courses are rigorous and specifically designed to prepare students for higher education. Guys will receive history homework help and other subjects. Students can thrive at military academies because of the structured environment. There’s madness at public schools today, some campuses have fights almost every day.

A military school gives students a safe place to learn.

  1. Leadership Abilities

Military academies try to teach their students to fulfill leadership positions. Most of the adults on campus have a military background. Young people need strong role models to look up to. Parents can fill that somewhat fill that role, but they shouldn’t be the only responsible adults a child knows.

Students also learn how to respect authority. You can’t be a good leader if you don’t know how to follow. Discipline doesn’t come naturally. Kids need to learn it, but the lessons have to be healthy.

  1. Curb Troublesome Behavior

It’s not uncommon for parents to send their children to military school if they’re having trouble adhering to the rules. Perhaps they’re getting into fights, experimenting with drugs and alcohol, or riding recklessly. According to the Barnes Firm, a Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyer, teens might be tempted to ride bikes and vehicles without a license, or to speed on the road for some adrenaline fun.

“Behaviorally challenging kids are still poorly understood and are still being treated in ways that are adversarial, reactive, punitive, unilateral, ineffective, counterproductive,” Psychologist Ross Greene explained. “Not only are we not helping, we are going about doing things in ways that make things worse. Then what you have to show for it is a whole lot of alienated, hopeless, sometimes aggressive, sometimes violent kids.”

  1. Responsibility

Childhood should be carefree and fun. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t learn personal responsibility. Students enrolled at military academies must take care of their uniform, bedrooms, etc. Their lives are highly regimented and they’re responsible for showing up to their classes on time.

Most military schools also have their students participate in volunteer work. Students learn empathy and compassion for people in less fortunate situations. They may get a job as well.

7 Reasons Why You Should Send Your Kids to a Military Academy

  1. Integrity

Becoming a good person requires deliberate work. Military academies help with that. Students at military schools are in a demanding environment ruled by a strict and inflexible code of conduct. They learn to respect themselves and others as well as the value of hard work.

Modern public school teachers don’t concern themselves with their students’ morals. They don’t have the time. Classes are overcrowded and it’s hard to give students the individual attention they deserve.

  1. Social

A military environment allows kids to be social in a safe way. They don’t have to worry about the usual issues plaguing American students. Fighting, drugs, etc. That means students don’t have anything to worry about when they’re making new friends.

A military academy isn’t the only option if you want your kids to succeed. But it is a good one, especially if your child has ever expressed any interest in joining the armed services.

A lot of military schools are boarding schools where the students live on campus and go home during breaks. This allows them to become completely immersed in the environment. It can also make things easier for you if you travel often for your career. Your child gets to learn and grow in a stable environment.

Speak to your child before you make any decision. Understand their thoughts. If they’re vehemently opposed to the idea of going to a military school, you should at least consider those feelings. You shouldn’t be ruled by them, however, especially if your child is young. Kids sometimes instinctively recoil from change.
