Regaining Motherly Motivation: Cutting Unhealthy Vices Out Of Your Life

December 10, 2019 by Diane

As parents, we can still feel that we are more than entitled to our glass of wine, or sneaky candy every night. But when it gets to the point that we are relying on these unhealthy habits to get through the day, this is when we’ve got to really make the effort to make our life better. Cutting unhealthy vices out of your life doesn’t just benefit your immune system, but it’s a perfect way to triumph over adversity. You might have said to yourself that you “need” that unhealthy habit, but when you are trying to make significant changes in your life, especially for the sake of your children, how can you cut these unhealthy habits out of your life?

Regaining Motherly Motivation: Cutting Unhealthy Vices Out Of Your Life

Make Subtle Swaps

This is key to starting the process of giving up anything. With something like smoking, vaping is a swap that a lot of people have made. And with various sorts of box mod products out there, it’s a way to get you on the road to getting these vices out of your life. As well, think about your everyday “treats.” For example, if sugar is a big problem, swapping it to a low-calorie version can help, but if you feel that you need that sugary hit, especially in your morning coffee, think about something like agave nectar or honey. The subtle swaps are the perfect starting point to giving up anything, because if you go cold turkey, and you hit a stressful patch, you will end up off the wagon.

Removing Those Triggers

It’s important to notice what your triggers are, and a lot of this can be down to specific habits you have at certain times of the day. For example, if you come home from work and you immediately go for the cookie jar, this is a learned habit that is hard to break. Throw the cookie jar away! The crucial component of getting rid of any bad habit is the environment you inhabit. Alter the environment, and you will be able to have more control over the situation.

Surround Yourself With Positive Influences

Sometimes, we get into certain habits because of a lifestyle choice. It’s easy enough to eat unhealthily when everybody else around us thinks nothing of downing soda after soda. But when you are trying to turn yourself into a pillar of healthiness, it’s important that you find the right people to surround yourself with. You may not necessarily need to ditch your old friends, but it could be about finding new ones. As well, if there’s someone going through the same thing as you, trying to give up a specific vice, you’ve got a partner to help the both of you get through. With something like smoking, when there’s another person that is relying on you, and you on them, this is a massive motivator.

When you are trying to be a better version of yourself, by cutting out these unhealthy habits, it’s important to have a goal in mind. When we have children, a lot of it is to do with the fact that we want to be better role models. The motivation is essential because this is what can help you through tough times.
