Back To The Roots Water Garden
This Water Garden is actually a beta fish tank with a planter on top. The aquaponic ecosystem uses the waste from the fish to water and fertilize the plants growing on top. Each set includes everything needed to get started – but you do have to go get a new finned friend from the store.
Because of the unique setup of the aquaponics, this tank is pretty much a self-cleaning tank. And it grows plants too! Once you have set up the system, just watch the plants sprout and grow. Harvest your produce fresh off the top and when you are ready for a new crop, rinse the grow rocks off and start again. This is a year round growing center that the entire family will enjoy watching. Plus remember your new finned friend is doing his thing to help!
Although the set includes everything needed for several rounds of growing, it is nice to be able to order Refills and Seeds directly so you can harvest your gardens and start them over again right away.

What a great way to enjoy fresh organic herbs and micro-greens. We have had so much fun with the water garden. I admit I was a little skeptical at first. I wasn’t sold in the idea and really didn’t understand exactly how it would work. But once it arrived and we got it all set up, it has been fun to watch.
Our finned friend is called “Flamers” since he reminds our little Miss Allie of the flames in the fireplace. He also has a plastic friend that he doesn’t seem to pay much attention to except when we drop food pellets into the tank. He keeps a close eye on the other guy when eating. The rest of the time Flamers enjoys hiding in the little plants that we added to the tank (they were not included).
We have had several conversation around the water garden since it was set up. Watching the seeds grow into plants was “super cool” per our 6 year old. He thought it was cool when we snipped off some of the plants and used them in our scrambled eggs for breakfast. I will take that as a win when the little ones enjoy harvesting the produce they helped grow!
Parent and Teacher Resources
Something that I feel is important about the Back To The Roots brand is that they stand behind the products and want the future generations to understand the importance of taking care of our limited resources. They do this in a couple of ways. First they offer STEM curriculum to anyone that wants to use it on their site. On the curriculum page you will find lesson plans, activities, and teacher resources for their products.
