How to Maximize Your Living Space Without Breaking the Bank

June 21, 2019 by Pam Maynard

For most of us who live in small-spaced apartments or even houses with small rooms, there’s no such thing as too big a house. While smaller living spaces do come with some advantages, such as less space to clean, you’d still like most of your home to feel spacious and comfortable.

So, let’s look at some things that are going to help you max out your apartment without maxing out your credit card.

Buy small-scale furniture.

While oversized couches, chairs or beds might tickle your fancy, you’ll just have to do without them, but you can still get the look and comfort in other items that are just as nice. Antique shops are a favorite place to look for small-scale furniture because the average room size used to be quite small in earlier centuries. Look for small settees, loveseats and chairs that can work in your space.

Multi-purpose furniture

A sofa can just be a sofa. Or it can be a sofa and a bed and an item with storage. There’s really no piece of furniture now that doesn’t also have another purpose. Most pieces do have the option of being expandable, say for tables, or foldables or any other type of versatile feature. So it makes more sense to put your money into one item that serves several purposes. New types of multi-purpose furniture are very trendy and will come in an array of designs and styles to suit any apartment.

Partition

Every home should have its private areas where you really don’t want guests seeing it simply because it’s your private space.

Let’s say you live in a country with deep-rooted customs and home etiquette rules, but your place is too small to allow privacy in your home. This is one reason for you to create a partition in the area between your private space and the space used for guests. In Singapore, for example, this is very much the case when it comes to the guests’ space and the households personal space. Getting a Singapore folding door to be installed by a contractor company is usually what most people do, and you’ll find that in general, getting a professional to have this done will be much more convenient from all angles.

Using bi-folding doors for small apartments is recommended because they will give you more space, and if your apartment is more spacious, you can also get a multi-fold door, which is a bit bigger. Besides closing of private space, these types of doors create more space than traditional doors since they fold in, in order to open them, rather than open out.

Minimalistic

Even in large houses or mansions, people are often going minimalistic in their homes. Minimalistic houses make up for lack of furniture in other ways, such as exceptionally nice flooring, and unique artwork here and there. Yet, there’s nothing to say you can’t go with a minimalist style in a humble house. In small areas, concentrate mainly on choosing the right item for the right space. For example, an ottoman has been always a classy piece to put in a house. For the sake of storage, many ottomans are designed with storage space. It might not be much, but every inch counts in storage.

Visual space

Besides the actual living space, it’s pretty uncomfortable to constantly see some things in your view in small areas. Heavy wooden items might be nice decor, but enclose the area even more. That’s why using glass for many items might be better because they take up zero visual space.

Use every corner

You will want to use up the space of every corner of your home. But you want to use each corner in a functional way. After you’ve exhausted all your resources, you could use some techniques to give the illusion a room is bigger. Furnishing vertically, instead of spreading out horizontally is one way. Keeping your walls white, and removing thick curtains are two other things you can do that won’t cost you almost anything, but their return is big when it comes to maximizing your living space.
