Is it Actually Cheaper to Shop Online?

May 26, 2019 by Pam Maynard

In today’s wired world, more and more consumers are relying on online shopping for all of their retail needs. While most shoppers believe that they are finding the best deals by shopping online, that is not always the truth. Here are three factors to consider before clicking that “buy now” button:

Is it Actually Cheaper to Shop Online?

Product Costs Can Be Deceptive

Keep in mind that free shipping is not necessarily without cost. The fees are often built into the product costs as part of a price manipulation plan. While it used to not apply, the Wayfair ruling means online stores collect sales tax in most states. For these reasons, it is important to really examine all of the associated add-on costs.

The Products May Not Be as Pictured

Although the low price point may be tempting, it is important to truly understand what kind of product you are getting when you buy online. Unlike shopping at a brick and mortar store, you do not get the chance to pick up the item and see it for your own eyes. It is much easier for online retailers to push inferior products because of this lack of access. If a price seems too good to be true, then it probably is. It is especially important to be cautious when purchasing name brand items from a third-party reseller. These items are at risk of being sold as knock-offs yet marketed as original items.

Shopping Cart Marketing

The data gathered while online shopping could be used against you. For every click that you register, retailers gain invaluable information about your shopping habits and what you are in the market to buy. This information is then used to bombard you on a myriad of online accounts and portals. While shopping at a retail store, if you decide you do not want an item that was in your cart, you simply put it back and the store never knows that you had once considered purchasing the item. However, when online shopping, anything that you click or put in your shopping cart is registered with the vendor. This enables them to continually market the product to you. This persuasion could cause you to overspend compared to shopping at physical retail locations.

Just like any shopping experience, it is important to compare prices and really examine what kind of deal you are getting. By taking these steps, you can truly ascertain if you are saving money.
