Depending on where you live, the winter months may have your family cooped up for days at a time. How do you keep your children occupied if you want to limit their device and screen time? Not surprisingly, a recent study indicated that children who spend more time on screens tend to be less happy than children that engage in non-screen activities like reading traditional printed media or doing activities on printed material. As a parent, I would have to agree with the study. My children are happier when they are participating in non-screen activities. Quarto Knows Books are a great way to strengthen relationships and encourage non-screen activities both at home and on the road.

Some of our favorite new books from Quarto Knows Books include:
The Great Big Busy Wheels Activity Book
My little boys all loved machines that made noise. Anything that they could make roar, whizz, vroom, and zoom kept their attention for hours. This activity book is full of games and puzzles and well as things to find and cool (or sick as my five year old calls anything neat) vehicles to color. The main characters are vehicles ranging from rescue vehicles to monster trucks. The story line encourages early readers to keep reading in order to discover what happens next. Will the vehicles be able to save the day?
On The Plane Activity Book
Keeping your little one occupied while taking a flight is often more work than most parents are prepared to handle. Having a book that your child can relate to goes a long way on keeping their attention off having to be buckled in for hours at a time on longer flight. This book will keep them occupied while playing ‘I Spy While I Fly’. It also includes planes to decorate, matching games, fill-in-the-face drawing tasks, true-or-false airplane and flying facts. I like that it is filled with plenty of activities to keep children busy and occupied at the airport and during the flight.
Get Smarter: Super Fun Travel Activities to Baffle Your Brain
Have you ever traveled with little ones (and this might include tweens and older kids)? Then your know how stressful and challenging it can be. Although you are on vacation, the vacation really begins once everyone is allowed out of the vehicle. Being prepared for the challenge of the trip is the best way to reduce the stress. Some of the “Are we there yet?” questions and “I’m bored” comments can be held at bay with any of the 75 games, puzzles, and activities in this book. Activities include crossword puzzles, word searches, optical illusion fun, paper & pencil games, and so much more.
Tales from Nature – Ladybug
Follow little ladybird as she works to help the gardeners with their aphids. When a swooping bird comes along, she is able to camouflage herself for safety but where should she hide her tiny eggs? This book in the series of Tales from Nature explains nature in a cute and simple way for non or early readers. Learn about what happens during the animal’s day, and what they eat and live. On each page there is a flap or window to spark and encourage the love of learning.
Tales from Nature – Bee
Meet and follow little bee as he works to gather pollen from a flower so he and his friends can make honey. This book in the series of Tales from Nature explains nature in a cute and simple way for non or early readers. On each page there is a flap or window to encourage and spark the love of learning. Little Bee is the main animal character and his day is illustrated through bright and cheerful images.
Sticker, Shape, Draw: On the Farm
This book is packed with 20 ready-drawn background scenes to populate as well as several pages of draw-on stickers. Children will love placing the stickers in the scene to create their own story. With a story scene of on the farm, children will enjoy coming up with stories using the farmyard animals like cats, horses, pigs, sheep, cows, rabbits, goats, and chickens.
Sticker, Shape, Draw: Things that Go
Any parent will agree that stickers are a great way to keep a little one entertained and quiet. This book is packed with 20 ready-drawn background scenes to populate as well as several pages of draw-on stickers. Children will love placing the vehicle stickers in the scene to create their own story. Vehicles included range from diggers, jet planes, cars, sailboats, trucks, trains and buses. There is even a rocket and a hot air balloon to add to your child’s story.
All of these books are going on vacation with us for Spring Break. From the sticker books to the Tales from Nature, there are hours of busy work that forces children to use their imagination. The art of being able to create stories and interact with others is being lost. And I honestly believe it is because we don’t spend time talking and dreaming with our little ones as much as generations before us.
I can remember making up stories with my mom and granma while we traveled. One of them would start a story and then one of us would add to it. Or someone would show a picture page from a book and we would have to make up a story to go along with the picture. Activities like this build more than the ability to think and reason, they build relationships. And at the end of the day, that is what is most important in our lives.
One of my grans is reading to the other about the upcoming vacation and being on an airplane. These are the moments that I treasure and try to capture with the little ones. She is listening so closely to her big brother tell her all about flying on an airplane.
These books, and others by Quarto Knows Books are a great way to encourage non-screen activities both at home and on the road. Stock up on activity books for everyone and turn off the screens. Enjoy the interaction and creativity of your children as you build strong relationship bonds through communication.
