Managing Water in Your Home – What You Need to Know

April 4, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Water is one of those things in life that most people tend to take for granted. It’s easy to not think about the amount of water you use, and waste one of the planet’s most essential resources. We all need to do all that we can to make sure that this does not happen. There is only a limited amount of water on the planet, as we cannot make use of the salt water from the seas. We have a responsibility to ensure that we make use of the water we have responsibly.

Of course, using less water also means that you spend less on water bills, so it’s beneficial all-round. There are several steps that you can take to make better use of water in your home.

Managing Water in Your Home – What You Need to Know

Turn off faucets when they are not being used

This means that faucets should be turned off fully, and not left to drip. A dripping faucet can waste around a gallon of water in just four hours. Faucets should even be switched off when you are brushing your teeth, and not switched on until you need to rinse. You need to think about your use of water all the time.

Use a kettle in the most efficient way

  • Only ever boil the amount of water in a kettle that you need to use. There are markings on the side of most kettles, to show you how many cups you are filling them for. This means there is no excuse for over-filling. If you do put too much water in a kettle, you should use the extra to water plants, rather than pour it away.

Take care when watering the lawn

According to Wikilawn’s Orlando lawn care guides: “Lawn irrigation makes up more than half of all Central Florida’s water consumption,”

  • The situation is the same throughout the US. You need to pay attention to any watering restrictions that are in place in the area where you live and adhere to them. You should also make sure that you water less frequently but deeply. This makes it easier for the roots to get the moisture that they need in order for the grass to grow as it should. Watering should always be done when sunlight is less, in the early morning or the evening.

Make use of water from natural sources

It’s important that you make use of water from natural sources. Collecting rainwater to use in your yard can be as simple as using a water butt. If you want to collect more rainwater, it’s a good idea to choose a reliable rainwater harvesting system to use.

Make sure there are no leaking pipes

  • Leaking pipes can cause a lot of water to be wasted. They are also a leading cause of damp which can lead to the growth of mold. This can have an adverse effect on the structural integrity of your home. Fixing leaks when they occur helps to preserve water and protect your property.
  • These tips can be used to help you manage the water in your home more effectively. Doing this means that you can help to protect the planet and save yourself money.
