5 Tips to Make Your Vehicle Child-Friendly

March 3, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Comfy Cars for Kids!

When the kids are happy, mom and dad are, too—especially during long car rides. That’s why it’s important to consider the role that a comfortable mobile environment plays into your child’s level of overall contentment. Making sure that your vehicle is as child-friendly as possible is ideal because it allows you to drive without distraction which adds a higher level of safety to the trip.

5 Tips to Make Your Vehicle Child-Friendly

Make it an Adventure

When even the most menial task has meaning, it makes it more comfortable and fun for children. Talk up the trip and then make sure that it delivers the “WOW!” factor by being something fun and memorable for the kids. For example, turn every trip to the doctor’s office, supermarket, and bank a voyage in a space ship or an opportunity to find things for a treasure hunt. Imagination can make even the most boring trips exciting.

Keep a Care Kit Within Reach

Some kids don’t handle riding in a vehicle well. Restraints can be stressful and movement without being in control can be confusing for young passengers. Unwelcome incidents and events like bathroom emergencies or emotional breakdowns are high likely especially if your child is an infant, potty-training, or tired.

Having a care kit inside of the car to handle mishaps and requests from your kids can save the day and allow you to get to where you’re going and back virtually unscathed. Kits can include toys, entertainment, snacks, extra potty supplies and clothes, and comfort items. Be sure to keep your kids and their happiness in mind when packing their car kits.

Make Repairs

If the vehicle needs to be repaired or replaced, it’s best to handle the issue right away before it worsens or risks your child’s safety. A local repair professional in your area can help with this by examining the area on the car and areas of disrepair in question and giving you the best course of action to take to address it.

For example, if your windshield has a crack or your side door glass has a large chip in it, instead of waiting for it to break completely, you can take it to an auto glass repair shop. This will help you avoid break-ins, cuts, and more.

Allow the Comforts of Home

Even the shortest trip needs take comfort into account. Allowing children to bring something from home with them can help reduce stress and increase patience while going through unfamiliar experiences. For little ones, it might be a favorite blanket or stuffed animal. Older children may want to bring a book or video game to keep themselves entertained while you drive or run your errand.

5 Tips to Make Your Vehicle Child-Friendly

Ask about Physical Comfort

The last thing you want to do is find out that your child is physically uncomfortable or even in pain while in the middle of traffic. You can avoid the problem altogether by asking your kid if they’re comfortable before you leave home. Especially with car seats, strap them in and double check their hold. Make sure there isn’t anything poking them or laying across them. If they’re not, make adjustments to their seat, the air conditioner or heater, and volume of music. Be sure that heavy coats, blankets, and more aren’t impeding their safety. Look up a guide for what kind of seat and restraint is appropriate for your child’s age, size, and maturity level.

Five suggestions for making your car more comfortable for your children are listed above. Keep in mind that the point is to make sure that your kids are safe and comfortable at all times while you’re driving to help lessen distractions for you and happiness for them. That way, you can focus on the task at hand without attending to a frustrated child because of any avoidable situations.
