Studying for the GRE with a Full-Time Job

January 12, 2019 by Pam Maynard

How do you find time to study to achieve a competitive GRE score when you have a full-time job? Such a situation may present a dilemma, making you feel pressured to choose to prioritize either your present or future. However, the good news is that it is possible to balance both. All it takes is your commitment to making sure you are studying the right way and using your time effectively.

Studying for the GRE with a Full-Time Job

Below, I have compiled some of the tips on how you can balance your full-time job and study for the GRE test

Identify Your Areas of Improvement:

Take a full-length practice test early on. Try to simulate the real testing environment when doing so. This will effectively measure your performance and areas that needs to be improved. This is important because it sheds some light on how far away you are from your goal. It can be viewed as a useful diagnosis that helps you to ascertain areas that you need to put more effort. Eventually, by doing this, you will be able to balance between your work and study since you will be sure of both your strengths and areas that need more attention.

Be efficient:

Efficiency is key, and you become efficient by being strategic in the way you structure your GRE test prep. You should familiarize yourself with the various available materials and devise a study schedule around your already busy work schedule. Failure to plan is planning to fail. So, plan your study schedule so that you will spend less time on areas of strength, and instead focus more on the areas that need improvement.

Register in Advance:

By setting a test date early in advance, you will have enough time to prepare for the test, and a set deadline for your studies. Additionally, it allows you to know how you can balance between your full-time job and when to study for the GRE.

Use your time sparingly:

It is wise to reserve any free time that for your studies. Remember, this is not permanent! A short-term sacrifice now may enable you to gain admission to the graduate program of your dreams. Therefore, instead of taking trips to places or partaking in social activities, utilize your that time for your GRE preparation.

Read critically:

Reading critically involves asking yourself questions as you read passages on the exam. Think about the structure, tone, vocabulary and how the question may be sculpted around that passage.

Develop a study method that works for you:

They are some study methods such as using the flash cards and some designated applications which increase your productivity and retention. Such techniques may help you to hone your vocabulary, for example.

Utilize available Resources:

I understand that finding the time to study can be challenging. This implies that you have to utilize every resource within the limited study time. Here are some of the ideas on how you can do so.

  • utilize your breaks and lunch hours
  • set up study dates with your friends to help you in discussion
  • utilize any informative material

Lengthen your study period:

If your job is highly demanding of your time, then allocate a longer study period than others might take. Maybe you’ll study for 6 months instead of 3. You will need to go the extra mile by starting your preparations as early as possible. Make sure to arrange for a distraction-free environment the week before the exam day. This will enable you to gain focus before you sit for the exam. Good luck!
