My Thoughts:
My son loves to learn with technology. Sometimes you have to learn from a book or by writing on paper, that’s true. But if I can also try to incorporate technology in a way that compliments our current subjects, then I try to do that as often as I can. For instance, instead of just reading about science, it’s super fun when we can do experiments together so he can see first hand an example of our lesson. Such as chasing magnets around on the table while we’re studying magnetic forces. Or building a vinegar and baking soda volcano when we’re studying geology! He’s also starting to express an interest in cooking and while I’m a pretty good teacher (I think) when it comes to learning knife skills, kitchen safety, and cooking basics, I know he likes having some independence as he increases his knowledge base.
That’s why the 4D kits featuring Professor Maxwell have been a hit for us! The kits include everything to get him started, whether we’re working on Chemistry lessons or working on our kitchen skills. I installed the free app on my smart phone and once I had it set up, we slipped the phone into the googles from the kit. Then he was pretty much on his own (while I stood nearby to be helpful) as he learned about various topics with Professor Maxwell. It’s set up as augmented reality, meaning that as he looks at the textbook or cookbook, Professor Maxwell shows up as an animated overlay over the page he’s looking at!
As I understand it, the smart phone’s camera “sees” the page and as my son moves his head around to look at another part of the page, the software picks up on the movement and adjusts Professor Maxwell’s interaction. He has an animated teacher right there, showing him important items from whatever he’s learning about. Take the Professor Maxwell’s 4D Chef kit.
He suited up in his apron and chef’s hat, we unloaded all the kitchen equipment like measuring cups, a rolling pin, spoons, and such and got them washed up for their first use.
Then once he had his goggles in place, he started reading through the opening pages of the book, covering basic safety points before working with food or utensils.
With a little bit of help and a few ingredients from the kitchen, he had made Smashed Avocado on Toast from the cookbook. He was thrilled to have done it himself (mostly) and have something to eat when he was finished!
