Mattress Buying Made Easy

November 12, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Follow these steps to pick the mattress that is right for you

Mattress buying is different from buying any other household items because it impacts health, and you must know how to select one that is right for you. Shopping for a new mattress might not appear difficult at all because there are plenty of sources of supply, both from physical and online stores, but it is not at as easy as it seems.  The terrifying thought about mattress buying is to withstand the pressure of salespersons because it could be much more than what you might experience when buying a car.

There is yet another bigger problem: you cannot compare mattresses of different manufacturers because it is impossible to compare apples with apples as manufacturers create proprietary models for every type of mattress. Lastly, warranties are not only confusing but frustrating, too, because most of the things that can go wrong with mattresses are beyond its cover.

Many people keep on deferring mattress purchases because they are unable to zero down on the right one. This is not at all good because if the mattress is giving you problems or making you feel uncomfortable, you should change it as quickly as possible. Delays in replacing mattresses can affect your health in the long run because you will face sleep problems.

Therefore, it is better that you learn the tips and tricks of buying the right mattress quickly. Although mattress buying might not be a very smooth and pleasing experience, you can always make it easier by preparing well for purchasing the choicest mattress. Before you set out to buy a mattress, first identify what you need and then decide on the type of mattress you want.

Is it time for mattress replacement?

Some indications say it is time to replace the mattress. If you feel uncomfortable when lying down, which makes it difficult to have a good sleep, you should change the mattress to a more comfortable one. Again, if you experience body aches, it shows that the mattress is not suitable for you and needs replacement. If you feel that you are better off when sleeping on another mattress, you can be sure that you must buy a new one. Compromising on the quality of a mattress can be quite costly because it can cause sleep disorders and spine-related problems.

Even if there are no signs of mattress replacement, experts suggest replacing it after 10 years, which can vary depending on the mattress quality and the body characteristics of the user. Some others suggest that after you cross 40 years age, you should change mattresses every 7 years as the body needs better support and the joints and spine become more susceptible to injury and deformity.

Know what you need

You must have a clear idea about what kind of mattress you need. As you know the pain areas, it should not be difficult to decide what could be the right choice that can address the issues you are facing with the mattress.

If allergies are your problem, you should think differently about mattress materials than what you would think if the mattress is causing back pain. If you feel uncomfortable the moment you go to bed, then you should look for a mattress with a soft and cozy sleeping surface that keeps you comfortable and makes you fall asleep.

Choosing high-density foam is good because it provides optimal support and mattresses with cotton fabric cover offer a more hygienic environment that assures good sleep.

Types of mattresses

Even if you are sure about the kind of mattress you need, choosing between coir, latex, memory foam, bonded foam and spring mattress might not always be easy. The better you know what you want from your ideal mattress, the easier the selection.

A hard mattress can provide excellent support but can also be uncomfortable, and a spring mattress might be quite comfortable, but with time, its support becomes non-uniform and might create problems with blood flow and allied health issues can crop up.

For the right support, choosing a memory foam orthopedic mattress is the best choice as it acquires the S-shape of the human body when lying down and facilitates uniform weight distribution across the entire mattress. To stay protected from persistent backaches and have a comfortable sleep, memory foam mattresses are an excellent choice.

Test before buying

Get a feel of the mattress that you intend to purchase by lying down on it for some time that can last between 2-3 minutes and 15 minutes until you are sure that you know what it feels like. Try out different types of mattresses to ascertain the one that seems most comfortable and then judge its compatibility to take a final call.

First, compare different types within the same brand before trying out another brand. Ignore the tags like extra firm, super soft and ultra-plush that sellers use for attracting customers and believe in your findings. If possible, have a look at the cross-section of the mattress to see what is inside and match it with the label claim.

Some mattress brands allow 30-day home trials that you should check for, and in case it is available this should be your best bet to try out the mattress.

Get the best price

The mattress market is highly competitive, with various brands offering an attractive price for customers. A proven method in mattress buying is to avail discounts by using discount coupons. While the coupons help to reduce the price, warranties help to provide the best value for money which is why you must check the warranty carefully to see that it covers the manufacturing defects.

Carefully read the warranty clause, including whatever remains in fine print so that you are not caught on the wrong foot later. Check if there is a free trial period, as some brands offer it.

The last-mentioned clause is quite attractive because it allows you to exchange the product of the same brand or return it in case you are not satisfied with it.
