Is the most common sight of your family the tops of their heads? Yep, I see the tops of their heads since they are all bent over various devices more often than not. Don’t get me wrong, I love technology and electronics for both their entertainment and educational value! But sometimes, I’d like to carry on a conversation with my friends and family including eye contact. I tried just snatching devices out of their hands but that didn’t go over so well. Instead, I went on the hunt to find something fun and interactive without needing to be attached to our mobile devices. Learn how to disconnect to reconnect with SeaTurtle Sports like I am!
About SeaTurtle Sports
We are frequently asked how SeaTurtle Sports started. Our story actually begins back in 2002, while on a family vacation in Grayton Beach, Florida, when the idea for the business – or at least our first game, Beach Bocce Ball – was born.
A life-long friend lucky enough to live on Grayton Beach introduced us to playing bocce-on-the-beach. Our sons, ages 10 and 13, were immediately hooked and easily torn away from the video games that had previously accompanied them everywhere. The only problem was this addictive new bocce game had rusting balls, chipped paint, and gave off the appearance of a very mediocre set. Inspired by hours of relaxed family fun, we set out to craft a bocce set that was both portable and durable, pairing bright, beachy colors with injection molded bocce balls that wouldn’t crack or rust.
We finally received our first Beach Bocce sets in the spring of 2005, just in time for Hurricane Katrina to barrel through New Orleans, forcing us to relocate, and pushing our first sale back a full year. When we did begin selling our game we were blown away by the response, and we knew we had something special. With new confidence we pushed on to develop more innovative games that would bring family and friends together to unwind, socialize, and make lifelong memories. It was a family affair with our growing boys, their friends, and ambitious college interns helping concept and prototype new game ideas, including market testing through tailgating, special events and summer “beach tours.”
Today SeaTurtle Sports is expanding rapidly with multiple products and a dedicated team, thriving in their roles as product designers, marketers, and managers, including our now college educated sons. It is rewarding to see so many people embracing our games and taking time offline to connect with family and friends. We hope you continue to enjoy our games (and coastal-inspired lifestyle) as much as we do and that you’ll share your stories and the memories you make along the way.
Products:
- Yazoo Bottle Beersbee Disc Toss Game – Toss a disc back and forth between players, trying to knock down foam cans on top of spike poles in the ground. They can be set to different heights and there are different points given for whether you hit just the can off, knock the pole and kick the can off, etc. And if you can catch the can or disc before they hit the ground, you can save the points from your opponent.
- HOOT! – A great combination of egg toss and scoop ball. Partners earn points by catching the ball at different distances without letting it drop. You can intercept your opponents ball to win points too! The first team to 21 points wins the game.
My Review
My family, and even my circle of friends, like to play games and have fun together. And yes, that includes together on our mobile devices and other gaming systems. Like I said before, I don’t have a problem with technology, but sometimes we all need a break. And we all need to go outside and enjoy the fresh air and sunlight!
As a kid, my parents sent me outside to play most of the time. It didn’t matter if we were playing in the yard, riding bikes, drawing with chalk, you name it. But now, to get my family outside, it’s a chore. I want it to be fun instead, so it was time to find some worthy activities to introduce them back to the outdoors. LOL
We started with Yazoo Bottle Beersbee Disc Toss. You push two sticks, one with a pointed end to go into the dirt or sand, and the other with a round flat surface, into place and set soft cans on the top. Then you stand on either side and toss a disc back and forth, trying to knock the cans down. The sticks can be adjusted to different heights if you want more of a challenge. And if you’re on the opposite team, you can catch the falling can or the disc to save those points from the other team! It can definitely become a fast paced game, trying to knock the cans down while the other team is launching themselves closer to catch the can and disc.
Don’t worry, the cans aren’t heavy and neither are the spike sticks, which collapse down for easy carrying. And everything fits neatly into the bag that’s included with the game set. We love to play this in the yard or even at the beach on vacation.
The other game from SeaTurtle Sports we tried was called HOOT! There are two scoop-like handles for each time, and a soft rubber ball. Teams face each other, and take turns tossing the ball to their team member. If it’s caught, you win a point. If your opponent catches the ball instead, they get the point! Teams get further and further apart, making it more challenging and fun to complete the tosses. If you toss the ball and yell HOOT! and catch it, you win 2 points instead! I love that there are very few rules and it’s a pick up and go kind of game. While this is definitely meant to be played outside, I’d be lying if I said a few games weren’t played in my basement after it was dark or we had bad weather outside.
Not only are these games from SeaTurtle Sports a great way to get my family active and outside again, the company also gives back to other organizations. They help small business owners get off the ground, support sea turtles and wildlife, games for troops, and even recruit interns from local universities!
