The Top Traditional German Foods That Are Worth Tasting

October 2, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Are you always looking for something new to try? If you enjoy tasting different types of cuisine and finding dishes while you are at different restaurants that you could potentially prepare at home with the right ingredients, you should start to visit some of the restaurants in Germany to enjoy fresh and wholesome traditional foods that are sure to blow your mind. Even if you are unable to make it to Germany for the food, there are still several traditional dishes that are prepared at local restaurants that you could possibly make at home.

The Top Traditional German Foods That Are Worth Tasting

Spatzle

Spatzle is one of the most popular foods in Germany. It is a simple dish, but it is quite flavorful, and many people think of it as a comfort food. It is commonly described as a dumpling dish. The dough is seasoned, prepared, and then added to a boiling pot of water where it will remain for quite some time as it cooks all the way through. Although the German’s are known for serving a lot of flavorful meaty dishes, Spatzle is a vegetarian dish. While you can eat it on its own, many people like to eat it with a side of meat and even some vegetables, so the choice is yours.

Bratwurst

There are several other traditional German foods worth trying, and Bratwurst is one of them. It may sound a bit strange to someone who has never heard of this dish before, but Bratwurst is a special sausage that is made in Germany. It is commonly made with pork, but it may consist of several other meats, such as veal and beef. The sausage is roasted to perfection and is then served on a plate for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It goes with just about anything, including eggs, sauerkraut, cabbage, rice, and even noodles. You can slice it up and eat it with a fork or you can put it on a roll and cover it with a few tasty toppings, including sauerkraut and sliced onions.

Schnitzel

Another tasty and traditional dish found in Germany is Schnitzel, a thin cut of breaded, fried meat. If you have ever had breaded chicken, Schnitzel is slightly similar to it. The thin slice of meat is coated with flour and breading before it gets placed in a pan that is full of hot oil where it is cooked to perfection until it is nice and crispy. Different types of flour and breadcrumbs may be used, but it all depends on the person who is preparing the dish. Schnitzel goes well with French fries, mashed potatoes, potato balls, and even cold potato salad.

Whether you are traveling to Germany or are simply interested in the cuisine they serve, there are some traditional German dishes that are worth tasting and trying out because you could end up enjoying them very much. Spatzle, Bratwurst, and Schnitzel are three of the top traditional foods that are commonly prepared in Germany. Different restaurants throughout the country prepare these flavorful foods in a number of ways and then serve them. If you like dumplings, sausages, and breaded meats, you are likely going to enjoy each of these different foods.
