As parents, we love to listen to our kids enjoy music, right? But sometimes, you just need a break from the movie soundtracks, TV show sing-a-longs, and the “kid” remakes of today’s popular songs. So what do we do? We find a way to keep music fun for the kids, without sacrificing our sanity, by adding a few new titles to our collection of course!
Review:
- Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers – Their newest CD, written with young pirates in mind, is “If You Want to be a Pirate: Songs for Young Buccaneers”. It’s a kids CD that adults would appreciate, so it’s full of humor, harmonies, stories, and solos, with all the mayhem and none of rum, murder, and sorrow that sometimes shows up in our songs. There are sing-alongs and dance moves, songs about a kraken, parrot, and an invisible crew (everyone needs one!), and a song or two about keeping the ocean and land clean.
Pirate music for kids? Yes please! These are great “sea shanty” songs just for the kids. The tunes are easy to pick up and follow, plus they are full of jokes and tales of the pirates without the rude humor. Plus these songs are designed with dance moves to keep the kids moving and get them dancing along while they learn a little about sea life, keeping the water clean of trash, and how to be a (well behaved) pirate on the sea.

- The Not-Its! – For 10 years now, The Not-Its! have rocked kids and families with their up-tempo albums and live concerts that give children their first “rock show” experience. With the release of their seventh studio album, Ready Or Not!, this Seattle “Kindie Rock” quintet will have children and their parents on their feet screaming for more, the moment they hit the dance floor!
Need to boost the kids’ moods on the way to school? Help them unwind and rock out on the way home after a hard day? Crank up the new album from The Not-Its! called “Ready or Not!”. A rock band for kids made up of talented rock star/parents that sing catchy kid rock songs. Some are just for fun and some include a lesson such as not saying bad words, what it means to lie, and even looking forward to traveling home again. The whole car will be rocking out when you pop this CD in.

- “The Hummingbird Sings and Dances: Latin American Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes” – An extraordinary collection featuring 19 traditional nursery rhymes and lullabies in Spanish originating from Latin America that have withstood the test of time. Warm, colourful illustrations with earth-toned backgrounds provide the setting for this endearing repertoire of family-friendly songs from 17 different countries. Solid musicianship supporting lively vocal performances transport the young listener into a playful, fanciful world inhabited by singing frogs and dancing skeletons! A map of Latin America and complete lyrics in Spanish with English translations appear at the end of the book. A really wonderful way to introduce children to music from many Latin American cultures and to get the whole family dancing.
Most kids are learning a second language these days and it’s so much easier to teach them when they are young! We are learning Spanish right now, and any time I can introduce songs and rhymes, my kids catch on quick. This is a collection of 19 nursery rhymes and songs in Spanish to help our children learn about another language as well as several other countries. Plus, they include a map for the kids to learn from and the entire set of lyrics in English so the kids understand more about what they’re hearing. Definitely a great resource for multi-lingual families today.

- “Dog on the Floor” by Raffi – Dog on the Floor has no less than three songs inspired by Raffi’s new puppy Luna: the title track, Walking My Dog and the self-explanatory Luna’s Song. Listen to the Horses, Dragonfly and Mary Had A Little Lamb add to the animal fun. Other album highlights include the rousing instrumental Fiddle Dance, and a memorable interpretation of George Harrison’s classic Here Comes the Sun.
Fun songs for kids, that’s what this album is all about. Songs about animals, dancing instruments, and families is the running theme. The music is laid back and perfect for singing along as the kids play with their toys or cruise down the road with the windows open.

If music is a big part of your life like it is ours, then you’ll want to collect all of these albums so you can enjoy them together with your kids. I keep a set in my car so we can shuffle through them when we’re in the car, and you can also download them to your tablet or favorite music player to enjoy in the house or on the go! Music fun for the kids doesn’t have to be cutesy jingles and annoying sounds over and over, or full of rude humor. These are the perfect blend of appropriate themes for the kids while not driving you crazy in the meantime.
