Do you have a partner who snores? Or maybe you’re a light sleeper and every noise wakes you up at night? I’m definitely the latter and it’s probably from keeping an ear out as my kids were all growing up that I hear everything! While it comes in handy sometimes, most nights I’d like to get a good night of rest without waking up a dozen times. I don’t like sleeping with the TV on because of the light and my music might disturb someone else so what do people like us do? We sleep in peace with SleepPhones of course!
About SleepPhones®
AcousticSheep LLC was founded in 2007 by Dr. Wei-Shin Lai, a family physician, and her husband Jason Wolfe, a video game developer. Dr. Lai struggled with getting back to sleep after patient phone calls in the middle of the night. She needed to listen to some meditative music to help her relax. But headphones were bulky, and ear buds were uncomfortable. Since there were no headphones specifically designed for sleeping on the market, she invented her own and called them SleepPhones.
They worked so well for her that she decided she had to offer them to all of her patients taking sleeping pills. Her husband soldered and she sewed the first 500 pieces themselves on their kitchen table. Initial feedback was phenomenal. One lady was able to come off of sleeping pills after taking them for 10 years. Another saved her marriage because she could finally sleep in the same bed as her snoring husband. Dr. Lai and her husband decided to patent their invention and start a real business. They completely sold out in their first year.
For the first 6 years, Jason and Wei-Shin ran the kitchen table business out of their house. After selling 100,000 pieces, they decided to take their business to the next level, hiring their first full-time employee and setting up their warehouse in Erie, PA. Since leaving their day jobs 3 years ago, Jason and Wei-Shin have won numerous awards as Entrepreneur of the Year in PA (SBA), Entrepreneur of the Year in Western PA & WV (Ernst & Young), and Small Business of the Year with the Consumer Technology Association. They have won 8 Consumer Electronics Association Innovation Awards for their products, 2 Pennsylvania ImPAct Awards (Entrepreneur and Exports), and a Red Dot Design Award. Locally, they have won the Disrupt Erie Award, Ben Franklin Award, and the Commitment to Erie Award.
From designing and manufacturing tremendously helpful products to running a fun, innovative company, Wei-Shin and Jason look forward to growing AcousticSheep to offer a fresh, new, natural sleep solution to everyone worldwide.
About SleepPhones® Effortless™
SleepPhones are headphones built within a soft head band that fits around your forehead and over your ears, instead of using earbuds or traditional headphones. They are available in corded or wireless models in a variety of materials and colors.
My Thoughts:
It doesn’t take long for a bad night of sleep to impact your daily life. From being grumpy and irritated to taking an unwanted nap or eating more to help stay awake, sometimes you need to make a change to get over sleeplessness. Yes, there are a bunch of prescription and over-the-counter drugs available, and even some alternative medicines and essential oils that work for some people. I love the scent of lavender but I can’t say it helps me sleep or makes me sleepy. So what are we to do?
I was curious when I first heard about headphones you primarily wear in bed. They are made from either fleece or a breathable material with flat “headphones” that lay over your ears, providing music, white noise, audio books, or any other audio file you choose to run through them. They also charge wirelessly by sitting on a charging base and they have both corded and wireless models, depending on your purchase. They fit around from your forehead, back over your ears, and to the back of your head, much like the popular running bands to keep your hair comfortably out of your face.
I tried out the SleepPhones Effortless model in the color Wild Orchid. These are Bluetooth enabled so I can sync it right to my phone or tablet to stream my music from my bedside to my headphones. Because there are no wires, I don’t have to worry about moving around when I sleep because I won’t yank the cord out or damage the unit. It’ll run for about 10 hours before needing to be charged, so I can listen to it all night if I want to.
The great things about the SleepPhones is I can use them for other things too, like when I’m working out or traveling. It’s nice to sync them up to my music or latest podcast I want to listen to, slip my phone in my pocket, and then either hit the sidewalk or settle in for a flight. And the headphones are removable so I can toss the band into the washer when it needs to be cleaned.
There are other units available too, like a pair for you to use wirelessly while you watch TV, a pair with a mic to use for phone calls, and even just a simple corded model that plugs into the headphone jack of your device so you can listen to whatever you’d like. Simply visit the SleepPhones website to decide which model you’d like, then what color & material you’d prefer, and finally what size headband you’ll need. Don’t worry, you can watch a quick video to see which size you’ll need to fit you comfortably.
I personally think the SleepPhones are a great alternative for people who have trouble sleeping. It’s enjoyable to have white noise, music, guided meditation, or even a podcast playing while you’re settling in for the night, traveling in the car, or even in between meetings when you need to relax. And you don’t have to worry about cords getting tangled up or carrying yet another device since they use your smartphone or tablet you already own.
Don’t miss out on your chance to sleep in peace with your pair of SleepPhones today.
