Here’s How You Can Choose the Best School for Your Child

August 3, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Choosing a school for your child can be a scary and stressful decision. Every child is different, and their educational needs vary greatly. There are a plethora of things to consider when finding the right place for your young one. If you follow these tips and guidelines, you can find a place where your child will thrive:

Here’s How You Can Choose the Best School for Your Child

Consider Homeschooling

If your child has unique learning habits or prefers to stay home, consider the home-schooling route. Homeschools are a viable option for students in K-12 and can help tailor a curriculum and schedule based on your child’s needs and preferences.

Scope out Those Test Scores

One standard way of comparing schools in your area is to look at the average test scores of kids at that school. Standardized testing acts as a measurement stick to compare schools. If test schools aren’t measuring up, the curriculum is probably lacking. Make sure to do your homework and pick a school with a shining academic record.

Consider Extracurriculars

While an education can get your kid to college, extracurricular activities can develop them into the person they are meant to be. Choose a school with rich after-school options. Emerging your children in the arts as well as sports at a young age can make sure they grow up to be well rounded, cultured, and happy adults. Look for schools with strong extracurricular programs and a variety of options to help your child explore their life interests outside the classroom.

Go For A Visit

Sometimes the best way to feel out if a school is right for your child is to literally, feel it out. Schedule a tour or a meeting with the school principal. Walk through the hallways. Does the school have a happy, warm feel? Or is it more dull and boring? See if you can picture your child being happy and prosperous in that location.

Get Recommendations

There is no better way to feel out a school than to talk to people who already attend. Ask for references and get the inside scoop from parents whose kids already attend your child’s potential school. The most honest feedback will come from those who have nothing at stake by telling you what they think, so gather the neighborhood parents for dinner and pick everyone’s brains on the matter.

No matter which school you choose for your child, research is vital! The more you know, the better you will feel about your decision, and hopefully, your child will be successful and happy!
