Moving the Family across Country? How to Make the Move Less Daunting

July 17, 2018 by Pam Maynard

A move across the country combines the traditional stress of moving with the stress of a long car ride. If you have small children, it may seem especially challenging to complete the adventure in a timely manner. Here are a few tips that can make doing so easier on both yourself and your kids.

Hire a Moving Company

While you may think that you can handle loading and driving a truck yourself, it will be easier to delegate that task to someone else. This allows you to focus on taking care of other tasks like making sure that the lights and cable are activated when you get to your new house. If you have multiple automobiles, car moving companies can transport any that you won’t be driving yourself.

Prepare for the Trip

Before you leave, you should know how many miles you need to cover and how long it will take to do so. You may also want to pick out landmarks, tourist attractions or other spots to visit along the way. This can turn your move into more of a road trip that everyone can enjoy. Furthermore, you shouldn’t be afraid to check into a hotel at night to get some rest and ensure that your staying safe while on the road.

Have Plenty of Entertainment Options

These days, it is easier to keep both children and adults occupied while in the car. Your phone or tablet can provide electronic books for your kids to read or act as radios that play your favorite tunes no matter where you are. If you have teenagers, inviting them to drive can keep them occupied while providing you with a chance to rest.

Develop a Support System in Your New Hometown

Getting to your new home is only half the challenge of moving. Afterward, you have to unpack, settle in and get to know your neighbors. If you have friends or family members in your new hometown, ask them to help in any way possible. Your employer or a local church may also be able to offer assistance helping you adjust to your new surroundings.

Moving is one of the most stressful events in anyone’s life, and it can be especially true when you have to travel to the other side of the country. However, by planning ahead and asking for help, you can transition to your new home with as little stress and hassle as possible.
