Make a Sparkly Unicorn Bookmark
If you are looking for something fun to do with your daughter, as well as get her to read more you can make a Sparkly Unicorn Bookmark. These bookmarks are easy to make, very pretty, and will help keep her spot in her summer reading. I love to see my kids read, and bookmarks are so much better than folding book pages. Therefore we made these bookmarks to while away a summer day, and to have beautiful glittery unicorns to stick in our books. Plus they make great gifts, so we made a whole bunch of them to give to all her party guests at her birthday party next month.
Materials
- Sparkly card stock
- cookie cutter, or pattern
- scissors
- pencil
- yarn
- hole puncher
Directions
First I flipped my card stock over so I could trace the cookie cutter on the white side of the paper in pencil. I drew about four outlines with the cookie cutter, tracing it on the outside. Then I took a print out of a unicorn I got off the computer and traced it on some thick paper to make a pattern. Then I cut it out and used it to trace five more unicorns on my card stock. My daughter repeated this on her card stock. Since we will add yarn tails we did not cut out the tails in card stock Next we set to cutting out all our unicorns. You don’t have to use two different patterns but she wanted variety.
Once the unicorns were all cut out, we just stared at the sparkly pile of pretty unicorns. They are just so delightfully glittery!
Now our unicorns needed tails, so I hole punched a place on the rump, so we could add tails. A single hole punch would work better, but I only had a three hole punch. I couldn’t see great, so I had to estimate where the hole needed to go.
After the holes were there, we got to prepare for the fun part. I got out lots of yarn in a variety of colors, so we could make their tails. Then we cut about five or 6 strands of our desired color yarn. Next the yarn was threaded through the hole, and we pulled it until it was even lengths on both sides of the hole. I tried knotting it, but I did not like how that looked. Instead I took another piece of yarn in a different color and tied a bow around the base of the tail,
Once the bow is on them, they are good to go. You can drop them in a goody bag, or add them to the outside of a gift of books. They are adorable and functional. Perfect for the unicorn lovers out there, and there are a lot of those if unicorns everywhere is any indication. You can really make these bookmarks unique with different color choices. Since there are so may card stock colors to choose, and limitless choices for yarn, the options are endless!
