I am among the many people that suffer from insomnia. Even when I can fall asleep, I am awake on and off all night long. With long stressful days, it’s hard to turn it off and go to sleep. You lay there trying to sleep but your mind is racing and takes off down a rabbit hole of those never-ending list you didn’t finish. Flip, flop, toss and turn – the night rages on. Add in a dose of Restless Legs and you have the perfect storm! There is nothing more irritating than being exhausted and sleepy while your legs want to start running a marathon! Well, I had been hearing many good things about Sensory Goods Weighted Blankets and how they can help with sleep conditions such as insomnia, ADHD, autism, and possibly restless legs. I knew I had to give them a try!
The thought of the weighted blanket actually brought me back to my childhood days of my Grandmother piling a ton of quilts on the bed. Seriously, I am not sure we could have turned over if we wanted to 🙂 Where we lived it would get seriously cold at nights with only a wood stove for heat, well, I guess the many quilts was her answer to keeping us warm. However, that memory also brings back the memory of how safe and comfortable it felt to be hugged and snugged by all those quilts. We had no trouble drifting off to sleep for a good night’s rest. So, it makes sense that Sensory Goods Weighted Blankets would work in a similar way, only without the piles of quilts!
About Sensory Goods
Sensory Goods’ company goal is to meet the needs of people affected by developmental disorders. We provide an inventory of products designed to meet autism, sensory integration, and other needs. We carry a wide variety of weighted blankets, floor products, sensory swings, oral motors, and more.
Why Use a Weighted Blanket?
You may be wondering, why would you use a weighted blanket and how can it be of a benefit. A weighted blanket molds to your body like a warm hug. Sounds nice, right? The pressure of the blanket helps relax and calm the nervous system. The weighted blanket provides a deep pressure touch and promotes relaxation naturally!
Just like getting a loving hug, the weighted blanket may trigger the release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are feel-good hormones produced in the brain. These hormones help combat stress, anxiety, and depression.
Sleep Disorders
If you, or a loved one, suffers from one of the many sleep disorders such as insomnia or falling asleep and staying asleep, weighted therapy can help increase the levels of Serotonin and Melatonin overnight.
I also consider Restless Leg Syndrome a sleep disorder because it sure has a way of keeping you awake! Weighted Blankets have also been known to help with this condition in some cases.
ADD/ADHD
If you have a child with ADHD, you will be happy to know that these children benefit from weighted blankets. The blankets help them become calm, relaxed, and fall asleep.
Autism and other disorders
A weighted blanket provides pressure and sensory input for individuals with autism and other disorders. A weighted blanket can be used as a calming tool or for sleep. The pressure of the blanket provides proprioceptive input to the brain and releases a hormone called serotonin which is a calming chemical in the body.
