One of the favorite parts of Easter crafts is dying eggs to be hidden in the yard for a hunt or even served at our big family meal. But what if someone in your family has an egg allergy? They shouldn’t have to miss out on the fun! We’ve found a way to include everyone from folks that suffer with egg allergies to vegans and even crafters who want to try something different with ceramic eggs from eggnots®.

My Thoughts:
Growing up, my kids always enjoyed dying far more eggs than we’d ever be able to use before they turned bad. And heaven help us if we didn’t find them all after the egg hunts were over (ever found an old sippy cup in the back seat? Then you know what I’m talking about)! And of course, the younger they are, the longer they want to keep their creations. But if you’ve ever dealt with a food allergy, especially a big one like for eggs, then you can’t even handle the eggs for the purpose of dyeing them different colors and designs! And that’s just not fair.
So how great is it that eggnots has come out with ceramic eggs that are perfect for dye, paint, and crafts? We made a few projects this year, starting with the typical dyed eggs for Easter baskets, just to show how easy they are to replace normal eggs with these worry & allergy free eggs.
Dyeing with Shaving Cream & Food Color
Items Required:
- Shaving Cream (plain white, not the gel based)
- Food Coloring
- eggnots Eggs
- Disposable Gloves
- Disposable Foil Pan (optional)
Directions:
- Put on your gloves to protect your hands from the dye.
- Add shaving cream to your foil pan or other glass dish. It should be deep enough to cover most of the egg at one time.
- Add drops of color around the top of the shaving cream layer, as little or as much as you prefer.
- Using your hands, carefully add or roll an egg through the dye & shaving cream layer.
- Once you have covered the ceramic egg to your liking, place on a paper plate or paper towel until you’ve finished the remaining eggs.
- When the desired number of eggs have been dyed, wipe the dye & shaving cream off with clean paper towels.
- Allow to completely dry.
This method was so much fun for the kids and even for the adults in the family! They experimented with different dye color combinations as well as dipping in a “clean” spot of shaving cream then only adding a few spots of color. The more you roll the eggnots in the colored shaving cream, the more marbled effect it will have on the surface. If you dip directly into a dye spot and remove from the pan, the more concentrated the color result. Plus, you can choose from many different food colors they sell at the local stores and online such as neon, pastels, etc.
Traditional Easter Basket
Another great use for the dyed or painted eggnots is to use them in an Easter basket! Fill it with colored grass or shredded paper then arrange the colorful eggs just as you would otherwise! You can see how we filled one special basket for a neighbor of ours who feels left out when it comes to Easter because they could only ever use plastic eggs. Now they are able to celebrate egg hunts and baskets with a more natural alternative without concerns for an egg allergy!
Decorating
Since these eggs will virtually last forever, you can also easily use them in your home decorations for the entire season! Not only can they be dyed with food color, you can also use a variety of paint types or even spray paint them! Plus they take washi tape, glitter, or even hot glued crystals better than most alternative egg types. We used them in several projects such as adding them into a glass jar or vase with some colored grass and plastic flowers and even onto a holiday message chalkboard! With these eggnots, you can safely color them to fit into any color scheme and you don’t have to worry about them turning bad, egg allergies, or even vegan friends and family members.
I think these safe and allergy-free eggs from eggnots are a great alternative to traditional Easter eggs. They can be used in almost all the same ways so no one has to miss out on any fun or decorating activities. Whether you are protecting loved ones from having an allergic reaction or want to be able to decorate with dyed or decorated eggs around your home for longer than just a few days, then be sure to pick up some eggnots for your family.
