5 Reasons Why Your Child Should Be Involved in the Arts at School

December 6, 2017 by Pam Maynard

People of all ages are often captivated by the arts, and this is especially true for school children. Encouraging your child to take art classes at school will help sharpen their creativity skills and better fulfill their lives in a multitude of other ways. Check out these five additional reasons why your son or daughter should be involved in the arts at school:

5 Reasons Why Your Child Should Be Involved in the Arts at School

Fun and Learning in One

Making new artistic creations is more fun than memorizing information from textbooks. Some kids get discouraged with their schooling because of boring subject matters. An art class, however, provides exciting ways to learn new subjects while enriching the mind. Whether your child takes a drawing, painting or performance arts class, you’ll likely notice a sense of enjoyment. Some of these classes make learning feel more like playtime but are still able to shape young minds in positive ways.

Overcome Learning Challenges

The arts can possibly help your child move past learning challenges that are standing in the way of progress. According to PBS, children with ADHD and other learning disabilities may especially benefit by attending art classes. Sculpting, painting and other forms of art allow children to express themselves through their work instead of verbally. This nonverbal form of expression can help some children demonstrate their knowledge to their teacher more effectively and improve their learning. Music education, in particular, has been shown to help students who struggle in math by engaging the right side of the brain.

Positive Outlet

Life can be stressful, even for youngsters. That is why having the opportunity to be creative can be important for them. By drawing, painting or participating in some other art form, your child will be able to more fully express themselves. This can be quite therapeutic! In fact, many therapists ask children to draw what they’re feeling or different aspects of their lives. What they draw can them be used to determine what they are thinking. This is important as many children lack the maturity and ability to put what they’re feeling into words.

Of course, your child’s school may not use art in a therapeutic matter. Yet, you can use the art that he or she creates as a window into your child’s mind. When your child brings art home, don’t just set it aside or quickly tack it up onto the fridge. Instead, take the time to sit down with him or her and discuss what was created. You may learn more about who your child is and what they are going through on a more personal level by doing that.

Cultural Awareness

Art often combines different aspects of worldly cultures. This gives your child the opportunity to learn about other ways of life. Having more cultural awareness will help your child be more accepting of people of different backgrounds, which is an important life skill. Your son or daughter will also likely be more eager to learn about the world and expand their horizons. Cultural awareness makes it easier to adjust to foreign lands and people if your child chooses to travel abroad.

A Viable Future Career

An exciting career in the arts that’s financially rewarding may be in your child’s future with the right training. Taking art classes can set your child up to pursue a masters in teaching arts at an accredited university. Creating art pieces to sell online or in shops or galleries is another possible option. School performance art classes may prepare your son or daughter to become a big-name movie, music or Broadway star. The arts may also inspire your child to eventually work as a museum curator or an art dealer.

Studying the arts in school can benefit your child in many ways. Cognitive, creative and people skills can all be developed more effectively by taking art classes regularly.
