Out Of Work Due To Injury? 3 Ways To Make The Family Budget Last

December 2, 2017 by Pam Maynard

It can be difficult to make it financially when you’ve become injured and can’t go to work to earn money for yourself and your family. Situations like these do arise from time to time, so it is important to know how to make your family budget work when you’re injured. There are many things you can do to conserve money while you’re unable to work. Some of the things you can do to help yourself and your family take little more than a phone call to initiate.

Out Of Work Due To Injury? 3 Ways To Make The Family Budget Last

Housing And Related Expenses

If you own a home, mortgage payments can be difficult to pay when you’re unable to work. Check to see if your bank or other financial institution that you have your loan through will work with you. Many payment due dates have grace periods in which you can be late on a payment without having to pay penalties or additional interest. Check to see if your mortgage contains any grace period clause in the fine print. Grace periods will give you a bit of extra time to make your payments each month. You’ll also want to check with your electric company and other utility providers to ask them if they offer programs for those who are unable to work due to injuries. According to Lawyers.com, some utility providers may offer payment plans and work with you if you can’t afford to pay for your necessary utilities. They also state that charities and churches are places to check with to see if they can offer you any financial assistance when you need it the most.

Workers’ Compensation

If the injury that is causing you financial stress happened while you were working at a job site, lawyers such as those at Oxner + Permar, LLC can help you apply for and receive workers’ compensation payments. Workers’ compensation is something that many families need to receive to get by in tough times. According to NOLO, you may be entitled to hospitalization reimbursement and up to 66 percent of your salary if you are awarded compensation. There are other possible benefits as well.

Enlist The Help Of Family

Is your spouse able to get a temporary or seasonal job while you’re out of work? Even something as simple as delivering pizzas or newspapers can provide the extra income you need to pay some bills. If you have children, perhaps you can supervise them while your spouse works for a few hours each day. If your injury is too severe and you are unable to supervise your children while your spouse works, consider asking family members if they would baby-sit for you at no cost.

While it may seem like an impossible task to get by financially when you’re injured and can’t work, there are many things you can do to help you and your family. As you can see, applying for and receiving workers’ compensation can help you when you need the money the most. Having a supportive spouse and family is also key in tough times. Being injured is not fun, but you’ll be able to eliminate some stress if you don’t have to worry so much about finances during the time that you are recuperating.
