What You Need to Know about Speech Therapy for Kids

October 22, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Effective communication is an important skill for everyday life. If you are unable to express your thoughts and needs, you may have difficulty interacting with other people. Speech therapy does not just involve speaking, but it also entails swallowing and feeding issues, expressive language disorders, sensory processing disorders, social skills and much more. Read on to know more about speech therapy for kids.

speech therapy

Many children can benefit from speech therapy irrespective of whether they are completely non-verbal, they never stop talking or they fall in between. Most children are frustrated when they have difficulty understanding, struggle with social skills, or have challenges making the right speech sound and using language correctly. A speech therapist can provide the needed intervention for kids with a variety of diagnoses such as:

  • Articulation impairments
  • Language comprehension disorder
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Social skill deficits
  • Motor speech disorders
  • Fluency disorders
  • Feeding disorders
  • Language expression disorder
  • Social-cognition disorders
  • Phonology processing
  • Cognitive-communication disorders caused by developmental delays or brain injury

Early intervention

Every child progresses at a different pace, and sometimes parents may ignore or overlook challenges that their toddler has with speech. However, communication disorders are common in America, and early intervention is crucial in treatment. It is advisable for parents to take their children for speech evaluation whenever they have any concerns. This is important because it will help them know what is normal and what is not with regards to speech and language development.

Benefits of  therapy

Speech therapy can assist children to learn how to speak more clearly. This will boost their confidence and make them less frustrated when they speak to other people. Furthermore, children with language issues will also benefit academically, emotionally and socially.

A good speech therapist for kids will handle reading problems like dyslexia to help children hear and even distinguish different sounds in words. This can enhance reading comprehension skills and push kids to read more.

Speech therapy programs

Speech and language therapists will assess and treat language, cognitive and articulation challenges. In addition, they will also focus on feeding and swallowing. It is common for toddlers with speech problems to have feeding challenges. This is because both eating and speech utilize the fine motor aspects of moving the jaw, tongue, and lips in a synchronized fashion and this is not always easy to accomplish. Speech therapy sessions involve different strategies to assist kids to tolerate various sensations in their mouth.

Beyond the assessment and treatment of language, cognitive, articulation, feeding, and swallowing challenges, speech therapy programs often incorporate specialized techniques to address various aspects of communication and oral motor development. These techniques may encompass activities such as phonological awareness exercises, articulation drills, language expansion activities, and even fluency-enhancing strategies, including working with minimal pairs. Minimal pairs in speech therapy involve contrasting two similar sounds that may be challenging for a child to distinguish and produce correctly. By working in minimal pairs, therapists can help children refine their phonological awareness and articulation skills, enabling them to develop clearer speech patterns and better communication abilities.
