How Earning a College Degree Sets an Example for Your Kids

October 22, 2017 by Pam Maynard

There are many occupations that carry a great deal of respect, if not acclaim from others. Often this has to do with the danger associated with being a police officer or firefighter. People sometimes find it important to mention the high salaries that business executives earn. However everyone will agree, that the toughest job on the planet is being a good parent.

How Earning a College Degree Sets an Example for Your Kids

Actions speak louder than words

As a parent, everyday is a different lesson plan. While you may assist your child with his or her homework every night, their learning path is made of more than what they learn during the school day. Everything you do, every action you take as a parent sets a prime example for your child.

Even the smallest acts of kindness resonate with your child, no matter how young they are. Just speaking to others with respect with polite terms such as “please” and “thank you” are the beginning. Using proper manners at the table and tidying up around your home, show your child that one’s individual actions mean more than mere words.

Education is key

Parenting experts come back to the word “Education” a lot, because your attitude towards your child’s schooling follows them through life. It begins with your insistence that school days be regarded with a definite note of importance from the time a student leaves the house, until the moment when they enter their home again in the afternoon.

This respect for school continues when you insist on turning off the television, music or any other distractions during the hours when homework is being done. Adding to this, your involvement with your child’s school and such events as Parent-Teacher Conferences make it clear that you take the subject of education very seriously.

College degrees

It goes without saying, that the majority of parents today want their children to obtain a college degree. It doesn’t matter whether it is an Associates of Arts, Bachelor of Science or advanced degree like a Doctorate. What’s important, is that one has enough skilled training to be able to get the right job and tackle new technical fields desperately looking for employees.

This presents a dilemma for many families, as parents themselves may not have been given a chance to continue their education. It could be that only a high school diploma was required to get a decent paying job in their hometown. Or more likely, the cost of a college education was something that their own parents were not able to undertake for their offspring.

Part-time students achieve full-time results

This is exactly why so many adults make a point of studying for own college degree later in life. By working with an online degree program, it makes it possible to take courses and advance one’s own post-secondary education. Unlike traditional colleges and universities that demand students take courses on campus, an online degree program works with one’s own personal schedule to deliver impressive results.

When you take the time to sit at your desk or kitchen table to learn from an online degree program, your child sees that education is something to be prized. Learning online or from books doesn’t end when one graduates from high school. Your determination to better your life and that of your family speaks volumes in ways that can never be underestimated.

Work, home and family are part of the triangle of daily living. By setting an example with education in front of our children, we are naturally giving them ideas on how to live. Better yet, we are assuring the quality of life of our future grandchildren and beyond.
