4 Tips to Follow When Encountering Health Emergencies on Family Vacations

September 23, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Family vacations are supposed to be a time when everyone has a chance to relax and create memories that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, health issues can flare up no matter where you happen to be. Let’s look at some ways in which you can handle health emergencies while away on vacation.

4 Tips to Follow When Encountering Health Emergencies on Family Vacations

Check to See If You Have Coverage

If you are traveling within the United States, your health insurance policy may cover some or all of the charges incurred. If you are traveling overseas, the country that you are in may have a national insurance program that may cover some or all of the cost of getting medical help. Some, such as Medicare Advantage plans, may be tailored in one of several ways. Travel insurance policies may provide coverage for medical costs incurred if a health problem develops while on vacation.

Go to the Nearest City for Help

While the United States is not the only developed country on Earth, many nations lack the infrastructure that it has. Therefore, there is a chance that you will be in a remote location or in an area that generally isn’t equipped to handle health emergencies while in another country. Even if you are at a resort, it may only have the ability to stabilize your condition.

In a large city, there may be a hospital or at least some form of sophisticated medical treatment available. If necessary, look to take the first flight to a neighboring nation or wherever the closest hospital may be. If you have insurance, it may pay for an emergency flight.

Under no circumstances should you seek treatment in unsanitary conditions or from those who you don’t believe have sufficient tools or training to handle a medical emergency. While you may be desperate for help, one mistake could make the problem worse.

Do Not Ignore Your Symptoms

You may feel like you can tough out your chest pains or inability to see clearly until you get home. However, those may be the clearest signs that there is something seriously wrong with your health. Failure to seek treatment right away could be the difference between making a full recovery and being in poor health for the rest of your life.

If you are experiencing tooth pain of any kind, seek dental treatment right away. The pain could be indicative of an infection that may spread throughout your body. Furthermore, you could damage your liver or other organs by relying on pain medication or alcohol in an effort to numb the pain. Most dentists, can treat emergency problems, and it may only take a few minutes to pull a tooth or resolve other basic issues. Make sure that you have whichever professional you see send a report of what they did to your dentist in Rockford or wherever your home dentist may be.

Telemedicine May Help

If you aren’t sure how bad your symptoms are, you may be able to reach your doctor from wherever you are through a videoconference. Talking to your own doctor may be ideal because he or she has access to your medical records and may be able to make an accurate diagnosis. Even if you aren’t able to get to your regular healthcare provider, it may be possible to get a prescription or get your medical records transferred.

This will make it easier for whoever does treat you to administer the best possible care without further harming your health. For instance, knowing which medications you are currently on may guide a doctor’s decision as to how to stabilize your condition or what medication to give you after you are stable.

If you experience health emergencies while on vacation, get to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. Do not try to delay treatment out of fear that you are ruining someone else’s good time. There will be plenty of time to reschedule your trip after you get better.
