Make Your Own Cute Felt Dangling Spider For Halloween
My daughter and I decided we needed some cute Felt Dangling Spiders to hang up in our house. These versatile spiders can hang from fan pulls, cabinet knobs, on the wall, even from the rear-view mirror in your car. Since they are made with common craft materials, you might have the supplies already in your craft stuff. In addition to being easy to make they turn out super cute.
Felt Dangling Spider Materials:
- gray felt
- pipe cleaners-4 per spider
- Scissors
- gray or black Sharpie marker
- hot glue
- needle
- thread
- googly eyes- (I found cute Monster googly eyes)
- ribbon
- pillow stuffing
How to Make Your Own Felt Dangling Spider
First you take your gray felt and fold it in half. Then carefully draw the spider body outline. Mine looked a little like a two tiered snowman, with a larger circle starting at the fold. Now carefully cut out your shape leaving it connected across the fold. Flip it inside out if there is marker lines, or that can be the back of your spider. Then in the middle of the fold cut a small incision and slip your ribbon through there. Tie a knot on the inside of the spider body and add a dab of hot glue to keep it in place.
Next choose a contrasting thread color and prepare to begin sewing your spider. You can sew it up and flip it inside out if you do not want thread showing, but I like the way the color outline looks. You could also glue this but again, I think it looks cuter with the threads. I choose a purple thread to match my purple metallic pipe cleaners. Once your needle is threaded begin near the fold and sew the spider body down until you reach the smaller circle.
Before you continue, hot glue the four pipe cleaners on the inside of the smaller circle. I bent mine in half to determine the center and glued that point in the middle of my spider.
Next continue sewing and sew real close to each pipe cleaner that is coming out to keep them snug in place. When you make it around and to the larger circle, the spider’s abdomen, stop sewing. Now stuff the spider full of pillow stuffing. Then finish sewing the little fellow up and end your needle on the backside of the spider. Then tie if off with a small knot.
Lastly glue on some googly eyes-2, 4, or even 8. I had cool purple monster googly eyes and they looked awesome with the purple pipe cleaners and stitches. After your Felt Dangling Spider is done, you can position his legs just how you want them and hang it up.
This Felt Spider project was fun and my 11 year old daughter was able to make her own, all by herself. She did a fantastic job on her spider. Since she really likes to create things, and I am happy to help her explore her creativity. Plus any creative activity beats out the alternative of vegetating in front of the various screens available to our youth today.
