Husband Lost Their Job? 3 Ways You Can Help Ease The Family Stress

July 21, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Uncertain and turbulent times are ahead – your husband has just lost his job. This is a worst case scenario for many families and is likely to be the cause of unprecedented stress on you all. You may feel powerless and begin to get stressed yourself, but there are some tangible things you can do to help ease the stress on your family. Turn the negative emotions you might be feeling into resolve to help your family get through this crisis.

Husband lose job

1. Be Supportive

Your husband is likely feeling a torrent of negative emotions right now: extreme stress, uncertainty, fear and even crippling feelings of inadequacy. Possibly the single best thing you can do for him is to be there and support him through this rough time. Do what you can to make him feel as though he is appreciated and loved. Keeping his morale up will ease the stress on him as well as on your family, and make it more likely he will be employed again soon. If you honestly feel your husband would benefit from seeking professional help of any kind, encourage him to get some. Depression after a job loss is extremely common and can be catastrophic on an individual’s mental health.

2. Take Charge Of Budgeting

With less or even no money coming in, you can help ease the financial stress by creating a strict budget and adhering to it until your husband is again gainfully employed. Take careful stock of your family’s current expenses as well as how much you have in savings. Then you’ll have to decide which expenses are absolutely necessary and make some tough choices. Use it as a teaching moment to teach your children a budget and how to keep one. It may also be a good time for your children 16 and older to get a job for themselves and start covering their own ‘fun’ expenses. It’s a negative situation no family wants to be in, but you can help teach your family members the importance of a god budget and sticking to it.

3. Work On Starting Your Own Business

To ease financial stress, strongly consider starting your own business operation. Even if you already have a day job, doing freelance work on the side can help ease the burden on your family’s finances. You have a lot of options – you can do freelance work, start a more traditional business or even start your own business operation through companies Make sure you do your research, as some people may think this is an ACN Pyramid Scheme, when really it’s a business opportunity for you to grow with. You can even think of this as an amazing opportunity to finally start that business you’ve always been dreaming of. If will be a lot of work and success is never guaranteed. But it can be a great source of extra income until your husband is employed again and can continue being an extra income source after the fact. Perhaps your business will become so successful that you and your husband can run it together and make even more money than either of you ever did at your jobs.

If your husband has lost his job for any reason, it’s your responsibility to help ease the family stress, emotionally and financially, in any way you can. Seriously consider doing any of the things mentioned in this piece, as well as come up with your own ideas. For example, perhaps a low-cost day out to somewhere meaningful might lessen the stress and inspire everyone. If you’re feeling scared and powerless, take those feelings and channel them into doing something productive that can help support your family in this trying time.
