Precautions to Keep your Apartment Pest Free

July 16, 2017 by Pam Maynard

If you are living in an apartment, your home is more prone to pests.  Apartments encourage community living not only for the inhabitants but also for parasites. As these homes have common walls, it becomes easy for pests to move across homes. The key to controlling pests is to identify the cause of pest infestation by pinpointing it, and this task becomes quite challenging and complicated for apartment buildings. The dwelling units in apartments stay connected to one another in many ways. Besides sharing the walls and floors, the utilities are also connected and provides a freeway for pests to move quickly from one home to another. Pests are sneaky in nature and have easy access to go to homes, can escape the threat of chemicals used for controlling it.

Pest control in your apartment

Minimizing pest infestation

This does not mean that pest control does not work in apartments. To make the service compelling, you must take some preventive measures so that flies, wasps, bed bugs, rodents, cockroaches and birds that usually found in apartment buildings do not find easy entry into homes. It is true that it is almost impossible to eradicate pest infestation, but surely, you can minimize it so that it is easy to control it. As a resident of an apartment building, you must play your part well to ensure that pests do not enter your home in the first place. As you read this article, you will come to know about the ways of doing it.

Scrutinize incoming packages

It is most likely that you receive or bring in packaged items in cardboard boxes at your home for a variety of items. Remember that these cardboard boxes can be a potential threat to you as it often carries along with it several pests that find its way to your home.  These packages pass through various stations en route your home and pick up pests on the way. Do not be surprised to find cockroaches in grocery packages that you receive.  Before taking the boxes inside your home check it carefully to ensure that there are no pests visible.

Beware of second-hand furniture

Many people are attracted to second-hand furniture that they find befitting for their homes. Such furniture can be dangerous because it might have been a safe home for many different pests like powder post beetles, bedbugs and much more. Before bringing in any second-hand furniture to your home, carefully inspect the item and get it treated for removing pests.

Sanitize travel baggage on return

You might unknowingly carry bed bugs along with you when you return from tour. It is an accepted fact that travelers are susceptible to bed bugs that adhere to their bodies and enter their homes.  You might pick up these at hotels or places you visit during your travel and even from vehicles that you use during travel. Check every piece of baggage firmly and make it pest free before you take it home.

Preventing the entry of pests at homes is the best way to control it.
