Season for Adventure: How to Protect Your Summer Toys

June 12, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Taking care of your summer toys might seem like a hassle, but those preventative steps could save you from quite a few problems in the future. Issues such as dead batteries and dry rot could end up costing you thousands of dollars to repair. Here are some steps you can take to protect your boats, ATVs, motorcycles, dirt bikes, rock crawlers, and RVs.

Winterize Them Before Storage

Almost all vehicles need to be winterized if they aren’t going to be used for more than a few weeks. While every vehicle is slightly different, most need to be cleaned and have their fluids topped off. Depending on what batteries they use, you might have to put them on drip chargers or disconnect their terminals entirely.

Get Rid of Pests

You don’t need to use poison traps and harsh chemicals to keep pests off of your summer toys. Whenever you plan on putting your boat or RV in storage, you might want to invest in fragrant rodent and insect repellent. These products contain a variety of spices, herbs, and essential oils that drive most critters away. You also need to check your summer toys at least once a week for any signs of an infestation such as dark markings, torn fabric, unusual odors, and scat.

Invest in a Carport

Sunshine and rain can do an incredible amount of damage to your toys in a short period of time. While removable covers are useful in some situations, they can also be quite a hassle. A permanent carport from places like Coast to Coast Carports Inc. will give you extra outdoor space to store all of your favorite summer toys. Many of them even come with enclosed storage areas where you can keep extra gear and supplies.

How to Protect your Summer Toys

Work with an Experienced Mechanic

Unless you happen to have quite a bit of experience working on a specific vehicle, you should most likely leave the repairs to the pros. It is always a good idea to learn basic maintenance such as changing the oil and replacing the battery, but any structural damage should be taken care of by an experienced mechanic. Attempting to do the repairs on your own could end up putting you and your loved ones in danger.

No matter how well you care for your toys, accidents still happen. That is why it is so important to consider insuring all of the vehicles on your property. Many of the leading insurance providers will allow you to wrap your recreational vehicle insurance into your current home insurance or auto coverage.
