How to Know if Adoption is the Right Choice

June 11, 2017 by Pam Maynard

With thousands of children in the foster care system, adoption can be a wonderful way to give them a new lease on life. However, not everyone is prepared to be an adoptive parent. If you’re thinking about adoption but aren’t quite sure that it’s a feasible option for you, here are just a few things to consider:

The Legal Process

Adoption can be a long, difficult process with a lot of legal hurdles to clear. You’ll have to deal with a variety of applications, interviews, background checks, meet and greets, homestay visits and post-placement evaluations. You might also run into issues with the child’s biological parents or the general foster care system. While this isn’t meant to discourage you, you should understand the realities of adoption rather than having a rosy and unrealistic view.

Your Home Life

The good news is that almost anyone can adopt, including singles, retirees and non-traditional couples. However, you should consider if you’re truly prepared to bring a child into your life. If your finances aren’t stable or your house isn’t big enough, it might be better to wait. If your career is just taking off and keeping you at the office for long hours, it might not be the best idea to throw a child into the mix.

Your Resources

It takes a village to raise a child. Between counselors, psychologists, social workers, adoption agencies and family lawyers, you might need to coordinate with a wide network of people to finalize your adoption. You should also be prepared for interaction with the child’s birth parents or current foster parents. When deciding if adoption is the right choice for you, think about whether you have the means and the resources to see it through.

Your Potential Child

You don’t have to adopt a baby. Adopting an older child can be just as rewarding, especially if you already have children at home who would be excited about a new playmate. You might also think about adopting outside of your gender, race and location. While these adoptions will have their challenges, you’d be surprised by how much physical appearances cease to matter when you provide a warm, happy home to a child in need.

These are just a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering adoption. It can be the best choice that you ever make, but it’s not one to be taken lightly, so don’t rush it. Look at your decision from all angles to decide if it’s truly right for you.
