Fostering Talent: How to Find the Right Coach for Your Athletic Child

May 23, 2017 by Pam Maynard

There are some children who are just meant to play sports. If you have a child who enjoys spending more time on the court or on the field instead of playing video games, then you want to channel those talents as much as possible. There are athletic coaches who can help your child by working one-on-one with them in order to develop the skills that will result in a better athlete all the way around. When you find the right coach, it will also help the child develop the characteristics of a good team player if there is a loss instead of a win.

How to find the right coach for your child

Winning Goals

One of the things that you want to look at is the philosophy that the coach has about winning. There are some coaches who only want the athletes they work with to win and will use some type of punishment if there is a loss. This is the type of coach you want to avoid. Find the right coach who focuses more on having fun and working as a team instead of winning all the team as that’s not what makes a good athlete.

Effective mental performance coaching motivates children to focus on improving their skills and building resilience rather than just winning. A coach who emphasizes personal growth, teamwork, and enjoying the process can help children develop a positive mindset that will serve them well both in sports and in life.

Educational Background

Many coaches have taken at least some kind of course when it comes to training or playing sports. Some may have even gone through a coaching master’s degree program—of course, those types of coaches are more likely to be found in your high schools and colleges. However, you should definitely look at the background to see where the coach went to school and who the coach has worked with in the past. While the education of the coach isn’t as important as the devotion to the players, it’s a step in the right direction if there is formal training that has been received.

Role Model Material

When you see the coach with your child, you want to see that person as a positive role model. If the coach doesn’t live by what is taught, then it might be a sign that it’s all about the attention, which is something that would be a break in the deal before even letting your child work with the coach. Look at the values that are displayed as these will be passed on to each player.

Why Is The Coach Involved?

Find out why the coach wants to work with children. Is it for the money, or is it because the coach wants each child to succeed in playing? The reasons why the coach is working in the field and how they demonstrate those feelings toward athletes should be the same.

Finding just the right person to coach your child to be the best athlete possible can be a challenge at times. From the experience that the coach has to how the athletes are made to feel, you want to find someone who is all for the athletes and their growth and development. Get referrals if needed so that you make the best decision possible of what team to put your child on and which coach to have him or her working with.
