DIY Hop Scotch Mat
Do you remember sun filled summers playing Red Rover, I Spy, Hop Scotch, and racing down homemade Slip-n-Slides with a mud bath at the end? I sure do! Some of my fondest memories are of me closelining my brother in Red Rover me and my siblings in the yard using our imaginations.
We’ve had a rainy few days here in the Carolinas. Rainy days with high energy kids usually leads to a very stressed mama who may or may not lock herself in the pantry with the last bowl of Cookies-n-Cream – don’t judge me. At any rate – I decided this time would be different. No stressed mama this rainy week. I brought some hip hop back… hip Hop Scotch that is. 😉
Me and my mini-me had lots of fun making our Hop Scotch mat. It was beyond simple to make and SO reasonably priced! I’ve only got around $11-$12 in the total project! You could do it for less if you chose to. There are so many options for “accessorizing” your mat. I chose to go with Duck Tape and Scrap Book Paper on a Yoga Mat. You could use any kind of tape to make the squares: masking, duct, painters … pretty much anything that’ll stick. If you don’t have/want the scrap book paper, you could always paint designs in the squares or do the more traditional numbers. Totally customizably (that’s a word right…?) simple!
Supplies:
- Yoga Mat (got mine at Wal-Mart for 7.97)
- Duct Tape (if you don’t have any laying around, you can pick some up pretty much anywhere)
- Scrap Book Paper (got mine at Hobby Lobby for 50% off)
- Scissors
I won’t bore you with senseless chitter chatter here. It’s pretty self explanatory.
Step one:
Unroll Yoga Mat
Step Two:
Tape down paper
Step Three:
Get jiggy with some Hop Scotch!
My daughter and niece had so much fun playing this indoors when the weather wasn’t cooperating with our playdate! You could use this indoors or outdoors and the best part – you can roll it up and stash it away when your not using it!
I made this cute little bean bag out of an old sock. I’m sure you have some that have been waiting patiently in a basket somewhere for the dryer to regurgitate its mate. Grab one, put some dry beans in it, tie a ribbon and you’ve just made yourself a bean bag!
What do you do to keep your kids busy when the weather keeps you cooped up indoors? I’d love to hear your ideas… the pantry seems to be getting smaller and smaller… or maybe it’s the cookies-n-cream padding I’m wearing in the rear… nah … gotta be the pantry!
Go get your yoga mat and get busy, you know you want to!
